Hi! My name is Catherine! I’m an artist and illustrator and it has always been my dream to have my children book. This year I decided to take my dream seriously and I worked really hard.
The story is inspired by very special summer solstice celebrations in Latvia called Jāņi. There are three main characters Miks, Minka and Muris. The story is about friendship, acceptance and summer solstice magic💚
As I am self publishing, my social media is my only way to promote my book. Please help me spread the words and follow me for more updates on the book!
Thank you for your support 🫶🙏

Latvia has one of the most unique choral traditions in the world.

Every five years, more than 15,000 singers gather on one stage to sing beloved Latvian songs during the Latvian Song and Dance Festival. It’s not just a concert—it’s a celebration of culture, identity, and a tradition that has united Latvians for over 150 years.

I recently attended Manai dzimtenei which isn’t the official Song and Dance Festival, but it brought together around 6,000 choir singers at the same iconic stage. Hearing thousands of voices singing together was such an emotional experience that I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards.

So, of course, I had to paint it in my own way.

Here are the choir singers reimagined as cats, dressed in traditional Latvian folk costumes. ❤️🇱🇻

Hello friends! Let me explain 😭
After posting my last video, I learned that “Cat Choir” means something different in Latvia 😅
In Latvia, “cat choir” is when a group of people sing quiet horribly. And that was NOT my intention at all for this painting 😅😆

My intention was to paint such an impressive, beautiful and emotional event with my muse CATS! I wanted to capture the harmony and individuality of the choir singers.

I hope this explains my story 😄

Gouache painting of sweet cat Grace who sadly passed away recently 🥺❤️‍🩹

As a cat mom, when I get a commission to paint a portrait of a cat who had recently passed away, it brings me a lot of emotions. It is very sad to know that such a sweet angel is no longer with us, but I want to ensure that she is remembered as the happy sweet girl and only leave good memories with her owners.

I hope this little painting brings Grace’s owners peace and happy memories 🫶

Here are some close-ups of a very special commission 🇰🇷🇱🇻❤️

The client wanted me to bring two people from different cultures, Korea and Latvia, together in one painting. This commission felt especially close to my heart because I could personally relate to the story behind it.

I had so much fun painting the Korean and Latvian traditional costumes, surrounded by all the little flowers and details inspired by both cultures 🌸

I love when my painting tells a little story of its own 🥹🩷

For this commission, I was asked to bring two cultures and two people from Korea and Latvia together in one little world. 🇰🇷❤️🇱🇻

I imagined the two cats sitting in a garden of 인연 (In-yeon), a Korean word that describes the meaningful connections that bring people into each other’s lives.

The black cat represents Korean culture and holds a 복숭아 (peach), while the ginger cat represents Latvian culture and holds rabarbers (rhubarb). These are the couple’s favourite words from each other’s languages 🥹

Their pinky fingers are joined by a red thread, inspired by a belief in Korea of invisible red thread connecting two people destined to find one another.

And in the night sky are Vega and Altair, inspired by the Korean tale of 견우와 직녀, two lovers separated by the Milky Way who are able to meet again once a year. ✨

I wanted this painting to feel like a little folk tale of their own. Two people from different cultures, connected by a thread, sitting together under the same moon. 🇰🇷🌕❤️🇱🇻

Such a special commission to paint! 🥹

Here are some close ups of my painting inspired by cat mittens and toe beans 🐾

One evening, I just felt like painting a little cat covering his face with his paws. Then I thought… why stop at one? 😆 So I painted three more, and somehow it turned into a whole page of four happy cats lying around and being playful with their paws.

I finished the last kitty while my husband was outside cutting firewood for winter 🪵🐈

If you missed the painting video, go and check it out! 🤍

Come with me to paint while my husband chops firewood. 🌿🎨

Since I moved to Latvia, I get this question a lot. Why did you decide to live in Latvia? The simple answer is that my husband is Latvian, but there’s more to it than that.

Latvia is the place for us because it gives us the freedom to be true to ourselves. Here, we have the space and opportunity to pursue our dreams. I feel deeply connected to nature, the culture and history are fascinating, and people are kind and always willing to help. I mean, these are only few of the countless reasons why we made the decision 😊

Anyways, this is what I painted while my husband was chopping firewood for winter. 🪵🍂

Here are some close-ups of my commission for Leo! 🩵 Leo is such a pretty Ragdoll cat, and I LOVE Ragdolls 😻🩷

This commission was a birthday gift for my client’s sister, so I took inspiration from all the things she loves: the sea, cozy vibes, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. I wanted to capture that cozy, nostalgic summer feeling, so I imagined Leo in a seaside garden surrounded by hydrangeas, with the beach in the distance. 🌊🩵

Sharing a commissioned painting for Leo, a beautiful Ragdoll cat! 🩵

This was a birthday gift for the client’s sister. I didn’t get to learn much about Leo, but I was given some lovely photos of him and a few things his sister loves: cozy interiors, the sea, hydrangeas, and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

So I imagined Leo sitting in a hydrangea garden by the sea, surrounded by little details inspired by her, all set against a cozy tablecloth 🌊🪻

Here are some close ups of commission for Attila 🌸

Attila is a tricolour coated cat who is now 18 years old! She was found on a cold winter day at a park, and she has been with her owner ever since. Her owner describes her like a strong headed emperor but with a soft heart 🥰 She is a cautious curious scaredy cat 🤭🤭 She behaves like a lady and very loving.

To me, her journey felt like going from the cold into the warmth of a loving home, so I chose a warm colour palette and surrounded her with spring flowers to symbolise that new beginning and the love she’s been surrounded by ever since 🌸

I hope you love her as much as I do 🎀
