So excited to announce that Marco Antonio Guerra, our first single as Silver Birch, is out today.

Named after a particularly mysterious and intense character in Roberto Bolaño’s epic novel 2666, the riff for this tune came into my head while I was leaning out @electrobeard and @alicealicegrant’s window in Deptford High Street late one night in early 2011.

The riff felt like a cascade of bonkers merry-go-round mental ear worm neural labrinth spirals, which kind of sums up my state of mind at the time.

Well excited to bring this out into the world, and we can’t wait to play it live. Thanks so much to @sebrochford @ruthgoller @chris_sharkey_music for amazing amazing playing, Sam Hobbs aka @rebel_elements for recording and mixing this and Richard Greenan @kitrecs for so much positivity and encouragement.

Celebrating the 100th release on Kit, The Hague artist — and overseer of esteemed Plafond and Rubber imprints — Ruben Verkuylen squints through the telescope to reveal a high-rise debut of constructivist electronics and domestic bricolage, as The Social Lover.

'Vertical Vignettes' looms like a cutaway apartment block of overlapping lives and skintled brickwork. These are less songs than scenes; inspired in equal measure by Jacques Tati's 'Playtime' and Georges Perec's 'Life: A User's Manual', Verkuylen presents a kind of sonic dollhouse — each track offering a striking glimpse of parallel living arrangements and peculiar private rituals.

A baby's scattered toys; a hand groping in the liquor cabinet; care and attention spent on a magnificent fruit tart. Like Tati's intricately choreographed cityscapes, there is a mischievous logic to these tableaux: a sense of interconnected miniatures set in spidered motion by the smallest gesture.

Verkuylen plays the benevolent voyeur — peering through windows and listening at walls, finding poetry in oddments of furniture, the detritus of human existence. Pompous eccentrics, half-dreaming neighbours. Someone stirs beneath drawn curtains. A muffled gathering pours into the small hours. Outside, seagulls squabble as they peck at a mound of ice.

Recommended if you like Joseph Shabason, Or Sobre Blau, Loto Retina, the Chevance series.

'Vertical Vignettes' is released via tape and digital on November 6. Inlays designed by Ruben, and printed at the great @pagemasters.co. by @kitrecs

O. is baritone saxophonist Joe Henwood and drummer Tash Keary.
As Pitchfork says, “O. forge a sound as unmistakable as their name is un Googleable”
and in NME’s words “none of their predecessors come close to the guttural, visceral sounds uttered by the NME100 alumni.”
The band has supported artists including Jack White, Gilla Band, and Black midi, and their debut album with producer Dan Carey was heavily praised by the likes of DIY, Dork, NME, Rough Trade, Stereogum, Clash and MOJO.
They are working on their second album.

In 2011, the plan for genre-destroying, trail-blazing punk-jazz upsetters Acoustic Ladyland was to re-emerge under the new name Silver Birch. After several years of constant touring and playing together, Pete Wareham (tenor saxophone), Chris Sharkey (guitar), Ruth Goller (bass) and Seb Rochford (drums) recorded what they felt was the strongest album the band had ever made. The label at the time disagreed, the project was shelved, and Wareham soon moved on to form Melt Yourself Down @meltyourselfdown

15 years later, that "lost" album - High on the Western Hill — is finally being released by Kit Records @kitrecs To mark the release, a new incarnation of Silver Birch featuring Max Hallett / Betamax (The Comet Is Coming @cometcoming ) on drums will perform the music live for the first time.

The music captures the band at its most intense and exploratory: heavy grooves colliding with anthemic improvisation, mind-bending rhythmic virtuosity, extended song forms and euphoric saxophone lines. Rooted equally in post-punk energy, experimental rock and dynamic improvisation, the album now feels startlingly contemporary — a missing link between Acoustic Ladyland and the diverse compositional approaches that would later define the work of all four musicians. by @kitrecs

SOUND UP! As yet unheard track alert! A snippet of Hopscotch.

We’re getting seriously excited over here in Silver Birch land.
Vinyl test pressings are in and sounding amazing, rehearsals are feeling great and people seem to be getting excited about the gigs too.
Really hope to see loads of you out in November - if there’s enough interest we might do more shows next year but so far the plan is to just do these so don’t miss ‘em!

Recorded in 2011. Played live for the first time this November.
