TAAS Member Kit Rutter has been hard at work on an intricate new papermaking project as part of a bookmaking residency at Bernheim Forest, home to a 600-acre arboretum and over 40 miles of hiking trails.

Kit joined us this past summer as part of our Ozark Storytelling Residency Cohort hosted by Mount Sequoyah. Concurrently, she is completing a year-long residency with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Arkansas Children’s Northwest Hospital in Springdale.

Huge congratulations, Kit! We’re thrilled to see your practice growing across so many incredible spaces.

A creative life can be built on lots of things, not just the work itself. It can be built on care, community, side gigs, shared meals, and the people who help us keep going. Table Talks is back September 24 with @kitrutter and @daniellehatchstudio on "Bread & Roses: The Care, Community, and Weird Jobs That Sustain Us." A real conversation about the unseen things that sustain a creative life we don’t talk about near enough.

Free and open to everyone. RSVP at the link in bio. by @kitrutter

🌀STILL POSSIBLE🌀 Opening Reception 5-8pm April 11th at Prism Art Space // Artist Spotlight: Katherine Rutter @kitrutter

Katherine Rutter is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores ecology, narrative, and multiple matters of care & connection. Raised on a small farm in Little Rock, Arkansas, her early experiences instilled an intimate relationship with the natural world and a curiosity to lean into the complexities of life. Through papermaking, printmaking, drawing, and foraging, she investigates the materiality and sensuality of our inner & outer landscapes. She currently lives in Northwest Arkansas where spends her time being in reciprocal ponds of learning/teaching, feeling/thinking, listening/listening, and exploring quiet places with her dog Dorothy.

Her large scale paper made piece ' Let the Light and Shadow In and Out' will be on view April 11th-25th. by @kitrutter

On Valentine’s Day 1990, as Voyager 1 completed its mission and exited the solar system, Carl Sagan convinced NASA to turn the camera lens back around and photograph Earth. Initially they protested, saying the photograph would be grainy and insignificant, would hold no scientific value.

But lo and behold, The Pale Blue Dot, the poem of perspective, the ode to humility. The mockingbird was telling me all about it this morning: how very small we are, how capable. I often think about this one particular day in Oakland, years ago — it was one of those shit days, stressful with low chance of ease. And then the Walgreens clerk was genuine and kind and I remembered my humanity and how both nothing and everything matters. Isn’t it wild what we are capable of? 🌾 by @kitrutter

“When we are sad and trembling with apprehension it is sweet to sing together, leaning slightly, clasping hands, afraid of much, yet resolute to conquer.”

Thinking about these words today that I placed in this book several years ago. How to hold this sorrow, this heaviness? Where do we find the antidotes to despair? Perhaps there are few solid answers, but it seems to me that holding each other, holding the questions, and tending to what matters are good beginnings. Take courage, take care, keep loving & resisting 🌾
