TAAS Member Kit Rutter has been hard at work on an intricate new papermaking project as part of a bookmaking residency at Bernheim Forest, home to a 600-acre arboretum and over 40 miles of hiking trails.

Kit joined us this past summer as part of our Ozark Storytelling Residency Cohort hosted by Mount Sequoyah. Concurrently, she is completing a year-long residency with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Arkansas Children’s Northwest Hospital in Springdale.

Huge congratulations, Kit! We’re thrilled to see your practice growing across so many incredible spaces.

Table Talks is finishing off strong with one final gathering to feature Danielle Hatch and Katherine Rutter: Bread & Roses - The Care, Community, and Weird Jobs That Sustain Us.

@daniellehatchstudio is an interdisciplinary Peruvian American artist based in the Arkansas Ozarks. She applies processes of collaborative making in her site specific installations, sculptures, and performances to counter the rigidity of the built environment and embrace women’s lived experiences.

@kitrutter is an interdisciplinary artist whose work engages ecological storytelling and matters of care through papermaking, drawing, and place-based material research. She is currently an Artist in Residence at Crystal Bridges in collaboration with Arkansas Children’s Northwest Hospital.

Table Talks is your chance to connect with fellow creatives, spark inspiration, enjoy great food, and build your community! This series is open to everyone and focuses on supporting the creative community, so come join us for the final event of this season to enjoy a delicious meal and hear from the artists themselves.

What do you think is the most important thing to bring to Old Friends?

A creative life can be built on lots of things, not just the work itself. It can be built on care, community, side gigs, shared meals, and the people who help us keep going. Table Talks is back September 24 with @kitrutter and @daniellehatchstudio on "Bread & Roses: The Care, Community, and Weird Jobs That Sustain Us." A real conversation about the unseen things that sustain a creative life we don’t talk about near enough.

Free and open to everyone. RSVP at the link in bio.

We just wrapped the inaugural Ozark Storytelling Residency, a partnership between TAAS and Mount Sequoyah Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Artists came from as far as Johannesburg, South Africa to spend two weeks in deep studio time, field trips, and workshops exploring what storytelling means when it’s rooted in a specific place.

The residency wrapped with a free public showcase on July 4th, with work scattered across the mountain — installations in trees, sound pieces, textile work pulled from the textures of the land itself.

@kuaf_radio stopped by to cover it. You can tune in to hear from the artists themselves on what two weeks of in-person collaboration can do.

Over two enchanting weeks at the Mount Sequoyah + TAAS Ozark Storytelling Residency in Fayetteville, Arkansas, I began to think about foraging differently - not simply as gathering things, but as a way of reading a place. Some stories can only be understood by moving through them.

Alongside 14 artists from Arkansas, across the US and London, we immersed ourselves in the Ozarks…. wandering woodland trails, visiting artists’ studios, museums and archives, listening to folklore and ghost stories at the camp fire, celebrating Pride in Fayetteville, swimming at secluded swimming holes, searching for fireflies and avoiding poison ivy, sharing intimate conversations over potluck dinners….

Beyond introducing me to the Ozarks, the residency changed how I think about foraging. Picking mushrooms, gathering conversations and collecting fragments of knowledge became different ways of paying attention. Some places don’t tell you their stories all at once. They reveal themselves slowly, through conversations, rituals, landscapes and chance encounters. It was in the everyday moments, idiosyncrasies and contradictions that I began to see how stories emerge through relationships between land, people, history and culture. Paying close attention became a way of understanding and a form of relationship.

Huge thanks to Roslyn, Eden, and the entire TAAS and Mount Sequoyah teams for creating such a generous and beautifully considered residency, and to my fellow artists for their curiosity, generosity and friendship.

I’ll share the process experiment that emerged from these two weeks in my next post.

Trip #5: The Southeast Part I, April 2024

It’s been 10 years since starting Piney Wood Atlas, and we’re celebrating and feeling nostalgic! Leading up to our next trip, we are looking back at each of our trips and remembering all the good times.

Our fifth trip came five years after the fourth! COVID halted our annual road trips and our project took a long pause as physically visiting the spaces is an essential part of Piney, and we just couldn’t imagine doing a ZOOM version. Between those years, many things happened, politically and personally. We both had major transitions, each moving to different states. Our lives changed bigtime but each year we wondered when it would feel like the right time to take another trip. The time finally came in the Spring of 2024, and we once again hit the road, visiting residencies throughout Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. Some special memories from this trip:

Kicking off our trip with Amtrak, the unveiling of springtime, a jewel box library, residency as an intentional legacy, botanical splendor, make do and mend: a pilgrimage to Folkling, kayaking around submerged cypress, southern porches & pools, haunted portraits, forest walks with Kit and Dot, the colorful & awe-inspiring craft community of the greater Asheville area, Western Wednesday, the residency that moved from Brooklyn to North Carolina so we got to feature them twice, Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum, residency as a feminist project, a poet with a knack for finding four-leaf clovers, lots of kudzu, emotional visit to Lorraine Motel, quilting town USA, driving through 5 states in 2 hours along the Mississippi River, river cane baskets in Cherokee Nation, fridge ghosts, Memphis Airport has the best art…

Thank you to all the residencies we visited! See comments for a list of ‘em.
