My finished piece "Light on Thomas Creek" for the 2026 Fairport Plein Air Festival

When I arrived I realized I accidentally left the paper at home so I started late and frazzled. But I'm proud that I could recover and lock in!! It was so cool to see how people approached the same conditions and constraints. I'm definitely going to enter more plein air events!

Chalkboard wall doodles with @adipsia ! Our kitty Modig loves to bat at everything above his head and he'd probably bat at the stars if he thought he could reach them

Image description: a section of wall is framed and painted black with chalkboard paint and on it there is a silhouette of a cat leaping up to bat at a star in the night sky. There's a UFO in the sky and plants and creepy crawlies at the cat's feet by @kittenfluffs

July 4, 2023 turned into one of the scariest storms of my life. I thought my car would roll over in the wind. Kansas weather is no joke 😮‍💨
Just a few miles from the track of the extremely photogenic 2022 EF3 Andover, KS tornado. If I could make a living out there I'd like to live on the plains and see all the storms (though, did you know that tornado alley is moving southeast? Check out the PBS Weathered episodes about this) taken in El Dorado State Park - Kansas Wildlife & Parks by @kittenfluffs

On cross country trips I like to stop at the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and stay at the Hillman Ferry campground. The night before I first stayed there the campground was hit by a tornado and it destroyed several campsites. On December 10, 2021, the 2021 Western Kentucky tornado, or Mayfield EF4 as it's commonly called, hit the Land Between the Lakes and left a tremendous scar still seen on satellite today.
I remember hearing about this severe weather outbreak live and watching in horror as the tornado hit the Mayfield Consumer Products candle factory full of workers despite 3.5 hours of advance warning to evacuate.
I was hit by a tornado when camping in 2009 and I was several feet from being crushed to death by a large tree. Sheer luck saved me. There was no warning–the night was beautiful until we woke to sirens and a tornado already upon us.
Technology improved vastly between 2009 and 2021, as well as public knowledge of SPC outlooks and what a threat of severe weather actually entails. There will always be an occasional "act of God" but weather related deaths are almost entirely preventable. Every child who died in the 2025 Guadalupe River flood died due to human neglect and malice. The farmworkers who died on Grant Family Farms died to individual greed (Andy Grant and family should be in prison) and the pressures of capitalism, not to a freak accident. The state and corporations decide that we are acceptable losses and the regular death toll from severe weather shows there's nothing on their end that will make them change how we stay safe.
I've visited this tornado scar many times now and I see how the land is recovering but it'll be hundreds of years before the scar fades. I remember how precarious our lives are under capitalism and remember that we are just a speck of potential profit for those who make their money on the backs of others and we will keep dying at work, in the middle of the night, at camp–until things change. taken in Hillman Ferry Campground by @kittenfluffs
