POSTS STORIES REELS

Hello!—I’m thrilled to announce that my exhibition “Between City and Silence—Photographs by Kit Young” is set to open at the magnificent Leica Gallery Munich this evening at 7pm. The exhibition—my largest to date—will present 60 of my hand-made silver gelatin prints of photographs taken over the last decade and a half, mixing both my urban work and landscape work in bid to create a new territory, one in which viewers are encouraged to explore the delicate dance between the real and the imaginary, where, through seemingly unrelated moments in time and space, photographs transport the viewer to a parallel place.

I look forward to sharing the work and meeting as many of you as possible at the gallery for tonight’s opening reception and Saturday’s Masterclass (9.30am-4pm).

Hello! I’m back from America and wanted to share a few snaps from last week’s opening of Venezia @thehulettcollection in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s a great honour to have my Venice work exhibited alongside works by @michaelkennaphoto who is arguably one of the greatest living landscape photographers working today. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many of you at the Collector’s Vernissage event last Friday and Opening Reception on Saturday. Tulsa is a cool place! A big THANK-YOU to all those who travelled to the opening from places as far away as Las Vegas, Dallas and L.A. to show their support for Tulsa’s premier fine art photography gallery. It was lovely to meet so many new faces too! What a trip! ✨

Hello!—With my latest exhibition, A New York State of Mind, opening at FAS44 Gallery in Las Vegas a couple of days ago, I’m sharing with you some installation views of the beautiful gallery space. The exhibition features ten of my handmade, selenium-toned New York silver gelatin prints, available in 11x14” and 16x20” sizes.

I took all the photographs in this exhibition a decade ago during my honeymoon in New York City. My wife and I spent five days exploring the city from dawn to dusk, and my Leica cameras devoured almost 80 rolls of black-and-white film in the process...

I’ve been busy putting together a new series of New York work, which I look forward to sharing with you very soon!

—————————

“A New York State of Mind brings together two distinct yet deeply complementary visions of New York City by photographers Kit Young and Mikko Takkunen. Presented by FAS44 Gallery at their Las Vegas space in collaboration with The Hulett Collection, the exhibition traces the pulse of a city that is forever in motion—its people, its architecture, its shifting rhythms of light and shadow. Young’s atmospheric, cinematic frames sit in conversation with Takkunen’s precise, observational studies, creating a portrait of New York that feels both intimate and expansive.

On view through 20 February 2026, the exhibition invites audiences to experience the city as these artists see it: restless, luminous, unpredictable, and endlessly compelling. A public reception will celebrate the launch of the show, with Mikko Takkunen in attendance. Together, these works offer a rare opportunity to encounter contemporary New York through the eyes of two artists whose practices continue to shape the evolving language of street and documentary photography.”

A photographic study of light and land, capturing the distinct atmospheres of dawn and dusk across the British Isles. These images record the first and final hours of the day in a series of contrasting landscapes: the dramatic coastlines of Cornwall and Pembrokeshire, the stark peaks of the Black Cuillin, and the wild expanses of the Hebrides and Scottish Highlands. Moving from the quiet waterways of the Norfolk Broads and the North Norfolk salt marshes to the expansive skies of Suffolk, the collection explores how changing light transforms our experience of the natural world.

Which print catches your gaze and why? 🤔

The darkroom really does slow you down. I recently went back through some old negatives of photographs taken in Venice in 2017. I was curious to see which frames jumped out at me now—would they be the same as the ones I printed in 2017 or would my eye see new possibilities? Well, a bit of both, as it turns out. I found my eye craving more luminosity in some of the prints I made back in 2017–they’re prints I didn’t share at the time because I knew something wasn’t quite right with them—too dark or too muddy. I have hundreds and hundreds of prints which are in this stage of limbo, waiting for future me to have acquired the necessary skills—the necessary experience—to do the negatives justice in the darkroom. Anyway, this is one such print. This latest version relies on the peppery highlights to pull the image together. Swipe to check out the delicious powdery grain in the couple of print details. Print available in three sizes.

Out early ‘stravaiging’ the freezing dykes and frozen reedbeds of the Norfolk Broads as the first light breaks through the mist. There is a deep, quiet magic in slowing down and simply wandering where the landscape pulls you—almost always with a bit of trespass along the way…

A journey through the Scottish Highlands. Shooting around 150 rolls in a week, walking many miles on foot and in my imagination, exploring only new places, the trip has resulted in a (mini) mountain of work. The negatives aren’t necessarily easy to interpret in the darkroom, particularly as sought to explore the inner light of my subject matter – by ‘inner light’ I mean the light that seems to emerge from objects rather than fall on them, a light that is like a conversation between things, a light that is the possession of the landscape, invariably radiating skyward.

Evocations of place: photographs inspired by the primary sensations experienced at daybreak and nightfall in diverse landscapes across the British Isles, including the Cornwall, the Black Cuillin, the Norfolk Broads, the North Norfolk salt marshes, the Hebrides, the Scottish Highlands, Pembrokeshire and Suffolk.

The best darkroom sessions are the ones where you completely lose track of time. Spending a full day under the red light just to get one print exactly right reminds me why I still shoot film—you can’t rush it. Yesterday, I spent hours working on a Venice negative from 2017. Hard to believe that was nearly a decade ago, but it’s still one of my favorite frames from that trip. For anyone wondering about the gear, this was shot on a 1964 Leica M3 with a 50mm Summicron Dual-Range lens—a formidable duo, of that there is no doubt.

As a photographer, I seek primary sensations and try to share those moments of wonder by creating hand-made silver gelatin prints in the darkroom. In an age where an increasing number of people are using non-consensual data scraping to create “images”, we must remember that artificial intelligence will never be conscious, it will never feel light on skin.
