My love, my brown-eyed friend.

Almost 25 years ago my Pawpaw built this place for my Memaw. It was their dream to retire here, but he passed away in 2007 and that dream was never realized. My childhood summers were spent here, fishing at the ponds, chasing quail, and riding around in his green truck.

I can’t wait to be your wife, Blake Hermes!

“And the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”

Sounds from last night of new friends, old friends, moms, sisters, fiancés, wives, single girls, college girls, and a bigger circle.

I used to think female friendship in your twenties was really hard, that everyone had their own circles already, their own timelines, and you either had to wait for an opening that might never come or be in the same season of life to truly connect. I realized the problem wasn’t a lack of incredible women; it was how comfortable I had grown in my own small circle, keeping me from reaching out and letting new friendships in.

If you’re a girl in your twenties (or thirties, or forties, or eighties) and friendship feels harder than it should, I don’t think it’s because the right women aren’t out there. I think the right woman might be curled up in bed crying over a stupid guy, or missing home, or feeling lonely, or stressed about work, or worried she said the wrong thing, or trying to cook dinner with a toddler on her hip, or wondering how the hell to do her taxes by herself this year. The right woman might be sitting at home on a Friday night wishing someone would invite her into their small circle.

You don’t have to sacrifice the dynamic with the best friends you already have or those high standards you want yourself and the people around you to uphold. You just have to ask yourself if there’s room to widen your circle. Compliment a stranger. Smile at your waitress and ask how her day is going. Lend your things without expecting them back. Call the friend you’ve lost touch with. Send the invite. The community you’re hoping for, or the one you didn’t know you needed, might be waiting on your courage to just go first. by @kkatehermess
