Every corner of my mind is illuminated with abundance and grace. On Friday night, 21 of the people I love most all gathered in the same place. They videoed while they sang and I sat bashfully behind a chocolate cake, both hands tucked beneath mosquito-bitten thighs, my candlelit eyes locked on a moment that will be framed in my mind for eternity. When I look back on this weekend, it’s their faces I want to see.

We woke to the Saturday sun drifting gently through wispy curtains, rubbing sleep from our eyes and tripping over the girls’ sneakers and boys’ boots scattered in haphazard piles across the floor. We all piled into one room and giggled through lively stories over cradled cups of coffee and the loving banter of 12 souls echoed through doors and I grinned til my face was sore. We threw on swimsuits and spent the day on the river and I let the rushing water cool my hair and the midday sun left cherished burns on bare skin and dragonflies tiptoed on calloused feet. Flatland and Turnpike took turns on the speaker and we sang and swam and danced and drank in the August heat.

We got dressed up and went somewhere nice and for once, I didn’t feel inclined to talk much at all. My sunburned lips settled into a content smile and though my eyelids grew heavy, I looked around at a full table of kind eyes and squeezed the hand of the man I love and prayed that time stall. We crowded into a dimly lit piano bar and raised toasts above the chattering din and pulled each other in for hugs and realized this is the youngest we’ll ever be. For a moment, the ringing notes faded out and I thought of tear-stained Bibles and prayers whispered at half past three and treasured adolescent years that disappeared far too quickly for a girl whose heart has never left her sleeve.

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, and now and forever I give thanks for everything that was lost. Because room was made for all these souls I get to love, ones who add life to my days and remind me of Christ’s gentle gaze and that’s worth any cost.

August 9th will always be about the ones who got me here and what it means to live in an answered prayer, and to my heart they will always be near

Half of the James sibling population got married this past spring!!! Kate, Blake, Freeman and Korey: thank you for beautifully modeling Christlike love, patience, steadfastness and devotion. April 26th and May 24th are days that’ll be in my heart forever ♥️
