The great debate: Joists vs. Trusses.

Being a mechanical engineer shouldn’t stop you from understanding the basics of structural design, knowing how the foundation of a building work only makes your HVAC layouts stronger.

I-Joists: You’re usually stuck running ductwork either between or you’re stuck with many bulkheads. For joists you really have to coordinate dropped ceiling location with an architect, otherwise it would be a mess!

Open Web Trusses: The web gaps let us thread ductwork right through the floor system, allowing for less bulkheads and a cleaner interior design.

No matter what you select, detailed coordination with the architect and structural team is crucial for a design that is efficient and aesthetic. Trusses are pictured in the images above!

Comment below which you prefer, joists or trusses?

Ever seen co-living done right in the heart of DC? Navigating a new city comes with lots of challenges from finding a place to live to meeting new people. 1000 M St, a new co-living space owned by @cohabs solves this challenge.

We had the pleasure of working on the HVAC, electrical and plumbing design of this cool co-living space. Our favorite detail? Instead of hiding the bulkheads, we leaned into them, using bold pops of color to turn structural necessity into a design statement.

Shoutout to the incredible partners on this one:

Proud to have led the MEP design for the transformation of 21 Church St in Rockville, MD. This 30,000 SF renovation has a modern take on an existing office building, with upgraded mechanical systems, and modern amenities. From the ground-floor fitness center and conference rooms to flexible suites and refreshed restrooms, this project is built for how tenants work today.

What is a must in your dream office?

Thank you @aiabaltimore and @quinnevans.qe for hosting AIA Baltimore Merging Professionals Happy Hour!

I had so much fun learning about Quinn Evans’ renovation and all the thoughtful details that make their workspace so inspiring. It was also great meeting other new professionals in the industry.

As we wrap up our first project with American University, we’re proud to have provided MEP design for the renovation of Roper and Clark Hall Dorms.

It’s been a pleasure collaborating on this transformation—upgrading outdated systems to support more efficient, comfortable, and student-centered community spaces. The project also gave us the opportunity to work closely with advanced building automation systems to enhance overall performance and control.

We look forward to seeing students enjoy the finished result soon!

Hope everyone is having a great holiday today! The weather is really nice so we decided to take a stroll through Georgetown where we passed one of our favorite projects @gracestreetcoffee ! The coffee was a 10/10. We got a hot black coffee and an ice oat milk banana foster coffee. It was a great time working with the architect Rich Markus and design build firm Atelier Verre on this awesome project. If you’re in Georgetown definitely visit, it is KKE approved🤗 @atelierverre.dc taken in Grace Street Coffee by @kkedesign
