I’m thrilled to announce that my upcoming book, FOR THE CULTURE: PHENOMENAL BLACK WOMEN & FEMMES IN FOOD, is available for pre-order now (link in bio) and will be in stores September 19, 2023! And this is the beautiful cover!

FOR THE CULTURE features 66 interviews (with Dr. Jessica B. Harris, Sophia Roe, Kia Damon, Yewande Komolafe, and many more) and includes 48 recipes by the interviewees and five personal essays by me about our culinary matriarchs, Edna Lewis, Leah Chase, B. Smith, Lena Richard, and Vertamae Smart Grosvenor. As my publisher, Harper Collins, says, “These collective profiles are a one-of-a-kind oral history of a movement, captured in real time, and indispensable for anyone passionate about food.”

Designed by George McCalman and Sarah Madden, with photography by Kelly Marshall and illustrations by Sarah Madden, For the Culture is also a love letter to Black women and femmes in food and wine and an anthology of wisdom that I wish I could have had when I was starting my culinary journey as a 21-year-old.

In order for this book to make an impact, I need your help.

Please preorder For the Culture and encourage your friends to do the same. Preorders are extremely important to authors because they show the publisher that there is interest in the book/author/subject. Strong preorders also give the book a chance to land on a bestseller list. Most importantly, strong preorders for a book centering Black women and femmes prove to the publisher that readers are interested in Black women and femmes—this encourages the publisher to better support these kinds of books and hopefully opens up more support and publishing deals for Black women/femme writers.

Another helpful way to boost this book is to order it from your favorite local bookstore and to ask your local public library to order the book so that readers can check it out. Of course, I would also be grateful for any social media posts encouraging people to preorder For the Culture. Thank you for reading this! I wrote about this photo by the late Doris Derby, a photographer, civil rights movement activist, and educator that was sent to me by artist, activist and curator @sherphotographs . The image is of civil rights activists and children at rest having a picnic in Mississippi in the 1960s. The idea of gathering outside and finding refuge and rest in the midst of tumultuous times is something that deeply resonates with me and that I intend to explore through my cookbook and through my project with @riseresidency . UPDATE: Thank you so much for generously supporting my GoFundMe!! I am deeply grateful for you. Thanks to 132 amazing people who donated, $13,473 was raised to help cover photo production costs for my cookbook, The Picnic Project (working title). We are in the middle of shooting the book thanks to your support! (The photos above are not from the shoot.) There is still a little bit to go to reach the goal so I am keeping the GoFundMe up and open to receiving donations if you have the desire and capacity to give. The link to give is in my bio and in stories or you can use @KeM75020 for Venmo if you prefer to skip GoFundMe fees.

For those of you who may not be familiar—allow me to tell you about The Picnic Project:

The Picnic Project is focused on picnics, and its mission is to encourage people to have more picnics, gather, build community and have conversations. I would like to connect the cookbook to this moment when people are, in my opinion, desperately in need of connection, conversation and sites of care, collaboration and strategy sessions to address the violent moment we’re living in—I believe a picnic is a joyful site where those things can potentially happen. I’ve observed that when we gather on the ground, on a picnic blanket, and break bread together, something happens that does not necessarily happen at a dinner party or restaurant—people go a little deeper in their conversations, vulnerability is as present in the conversation as frivolous topics, there is an air of play or creativity, people recline and rest, and time stretches out because no one is rushing you out to seat the next table. I started the Picnic Project because I wanted to make new friends, feed old friends, create community and ask people how they’re really doing—especially in these wild times. Picnics are not just a site of rest and care, they’re a site of imagination and potentially a site of reimagining how the world could be. by @klancycooks

Today is Ted’s birthday and it’s a big one! (Today is *also* our mother Liza’s birthday…crazy, right?!).

In lieu of showering Ted and Liza with gifts, please consider a donation to our dear friend Klancy Miller’s GoFundMe campaign to support the photoshoot for her forthcoming cookbook The Picnic Project. @klancycooks is a long-time friend and an award-winning writer, editor, and cookbook author whose essential, community-building voice in the food-cultural world is *everything* we need right now!
