🩰 THROUGH A BALLET TEACHER’S EYES
Part 4: What We See in the Basics

A simple tendu gives a ballet teacher plenty to observe. 👀

How does the foot move across the floor?
Is the supporting leg steady?
Does the dancer maintain their placement?
Does the movement follow the music?
Can they close with control?

Each detail helps us understand what the dancer is learning—and what to work on next.

Parents, look closely when you watch class. Progress might be a steadier balance, a more controlled closing, or a correction your child now remembers independently.

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, we give these small achievements careful attention. They help build the foundation for what comes next. 🩰💙

Part 3: Ready for Pointe?

Pointe shoes are an exciting milestone and preparation matters. 💙

Teachers look beyond a dancer’s age. We consider:

✨ Alignment and placement
✨ Strength, balance, and control
✨ Consistent ballet training
✨ The ability to apply corrections and maintain technique

Two dancers of the same age may be ready at different times. Each deserves thoughtful, individual guidance.

Parents, celebrate the progress along the way. A steadier balance or better controlled movement is an achievement worth noticing.

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, we value every step that helps prepare a dancer for pointe. 🩰

Part 2: Why dancers progress at different rates

Same age. Same class. Different paths of progress.

Every dancer brings a different combination of experience, strength, coordination, focus, and confidence.

One learns combinations quickly. Another needs more repetition. One has flexibility but is still building the strength to control it.

As a teacher, I’m watching for understanding and consistency:
✨ Can they maintain placement?
✨ Can they remember and apply a correction?
✨ Can they repeat a movement with control?

Help your dancer notice their growth. Ask:
“What did you understand better today?”
“What felt easier than last month?”

In 38 years of teaching, I’ve seen how patience and steady effort can help a dancer work through challenges. A slower beginning does not tell us how far a child can go. 💛

Next: What makes a dancer ready for pointe.

Part 1: Why placement comes first

A steady supporting leg. Shoulders balanced over the hips. Knees tracking over the toes.

These are some of the details I’m watching when your child takes ballet class.

We spend time on placement because dancers need a dependable foundation for turns, jumps, and more demanding steps. Each simple exercise is an opportunity to build awareness and control.

Progress can be easy to miss:
✨ Better balance
✨ Steadier hips during a tendu
✨ A correction remembered and applied

After 38 years of teaching, these small discoveries still bring me joy. They show that a dancer is beginning to understand, and take ownership of, their training.

Follow along as I share what ballet teachers see behind each step.

Next: Why dancers progress at different rates. 💛

Part 5: Building Confidence Through Effort

“Look! I finally did it!” 🩰

A steadier balance.
A combination remembered.
A correction applied.
A turn that finally comes together.

These small achievements give dancers evidence of what their effort can accomplish. 💙

Parents, celebrate the work behind the progress:

✨ “You kept trying.”
✨ “I noticed your careful practice.”
✨ “You remembered your correction.”

When a child works through a challenge with support, they gain something to carry into the next one:

“I’ve learned difficult things before. I can keep learning.”

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, we treasure these moments, and the growing confidence behind every proud smile.

Part 4: Honoring a Commitment

“I don’t feel like going today.”

Every dancer has those days. Motivation comes and goes. Commitment takes practice. 💙

Coming to class gives dancers another opportunity to improve. Attending rehearsal prepared helps the whole group move forward.

Parents can offer understanding and direction:

“I hear you. You made a commitment, and I’ll help you get ready.”

Listen to their concerns. If reluctance becomes a pattern, talk with their teacher. When a child is well and simply having an unmotivated day, your encouragement can help them follow through.

Sometimes the class they almost skipped becomes the class where something finally clicks. 🩰

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, showing up is part of learning responsibility, and discovering what consistent effort can accomplish.

Part 3: Learning to Welcome Corrections

“Why does my teacher keep correcting me?”

Because every detail offers an opportunity to grow. 💙

Stretch through your feet.
Adjust your alignment.
Soften your landing.
Listen to the music.

Each correction gives a dancer a specific next step.

Receiving feedback can feel challenging. Learning to listen, apply it, and try again is part of becoming a thoughtful, independent dancer.

Parents, ask:
✨ “What did your teacher help you understand?”
✨ “What correction are you practicing?”
✨ “Did you feel a difference when you tried it?”

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, we guide dancers with clear, respectful corrections and encouragement.

One of the most rewarding moments is seeing a student make an adjustment—and discover what they can accomplish. 🩰

Next: Honoring a commitment, even when motivation is low.

Part 2: Why Repetition Matters

“Again?” Yes, again. 💙

That familiar plié or tendu offers another chance to find better alignment, greater control, and more attention to detail.

Even professional ballet dancers return to the basics regularly. There is always more to learn within a simple movement.

For a young dancer, repetition can sometimes feel boring. Parents can help them notice the progress:

✨ “What feels easier now?”
✨ “What correction did you practice?”
✨ “What improved today?”

A steadier balance. A more carefully stretched foot. A combination remembered without help.

Those small achievements deserve recognition.

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, we help dancers learn the value of patient, consistent practice—and the pride that comes with improvement. 🩰

Next: Learning to welcome corrections.

🩰 BEYOND THE BARRE: LESSONS THAT LAST
Part 1: Perseverance

“I can’t do it.”
“This is boring.”
“I don’t want to go today.”

Sometimes these words mean a young dancer needs help through a challenging stage of learning.

Ballet asks us to practice, accept corrections, and try again, even when progress feels slow.

Parents, you help make that progress possible. 💙

Listen to the concern.
Talk with the teacher.
Celebrate the effort.
Encourage your dancer to follow through.

“I know it feels hard. Let’s work through it together.”

A difficult day deserves support and a conversation before it becomes a decision to quit.

One of the greatest rewards of teaching is seeing “I can’t” become “Look what I can do!”

That confidence can stay with a child long after class ends.

✨ Next in our series: Why we practice the same steps again and again.

Small jump. So much to learn! 🩰✨

Watching a changement in slow motion helps this young dancer see the details that happen in an instant—from her preparation and pointed feet to her landing.

I love the moment when a dancer watches herself and says, “Now I understand!” Video analysis brings corrections to life, helping dancers connect what they hear with what they see and feel.

A little imagination can bring a dance lesson to life. 🩰✨

Props and creative imagery help our dancers turn instructions into movement they can understand and feel. As they explore shapes, rhythms, and space, they practice coordination, musicality, and expression.

At Nan Klinger Excellence in Dance, play has a purpose, and creativity is part of the training.

The beauty of ballet is in the details. 🩰✨

Even a simple tendu is an opportunity to build strength, precision, and awareness. Every carefully brushed foot and lifted posture helps lay the foundation for what comes next.

I remind my dancers that ballet is all about the details—and every class is a chance to discover how rewarding those details can be! ❤️
