(Ad-DT) Playing with the new Amber Ledgers Magicals set to create the perfect underpainting and background, then layering traditional watercolors on top.

Using Magicals for the underpainting means I don’t need to worry about the color lifting as I add layers. I use the traditional watercolors on top because I like to be able to lift to create details. I love being able to choose products for the characteristics that will work best for each step of the process!

There is something so soothing about watching a blank stamped outline transform into a watercolor masterpiece! 🖌️❤️

(Ad-DT) Heat and Fluff from @simonsaysstamp has the perfect texture for snow and popcorn, but if you mix in a little @lindysgang Magicals, it can be used for so much more! I absolutely love this crazy bubbly texture, and the Magicals mean I can make it any color I want!

When people ask me how I learned to paint, the simple answer is that I practiced… a LOT. The longer answer, though, is that I challenged myself a lot- to use a technique that felt a little too hard, or to paint an image that felt a bit too complicated. Then I kept doing that thing until it was no longer felt hard… then I set a new challenge.

I originally purchased this stamp as a challenge image. The complicated shape of the leaves, and the idea of making each grape feel dimensional while also making the whole cluster dimensional stressed me out a bit. My first attempt was rough enough it became scrap paper…

Now this stamp was once again used as a challenge (for similar reasons) on a different surface (Masa paper)- the leaves were harder than my normal watercolor paper, but the grapes were actually more fun…guess I need to paint more leaves! 🍂

(Ad-DT) I often hear people get so hung up on the idea that “watercolors are too hard!”. And while it’s true, there are techniques and styles of painting that are advanced (as is true with most things), that doesn’t mean ALL of it is hard or requires years of practice to master. If you let go of the idea of perfection and hyper realism, you can just have fun with it!

For this project, I used a 3D embossing folder to emboss some watercolor paper. I then rubbed the side of a clear crayon (you could also use white crayon) over the raised design to create a wax resist. Then I started sprinkling @lindysgang Magicals over the image… a little goes a long way! You won’t be able to fully control where the colors go, but close enough is good enough! Once your powders are on, spray with water and watch the powders burst into action and paint themselves!

After your first layer is dry, you can mix up some darker colors with water and add in some shadows.

There is so much texture and details on this card! I wanted to make the beautifully detailed die cuts as realistic as possible- each piece it watercolored, then Glossy Accents was added to the orange and berries for a juicy shine and Stickles to the pine cones and needles for a frosty sparkle. The Holiday Bouquet die set is perfect for creating winter bouquets and wreaths!
