POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We were threatened.
.
We were called weirdos and pedophiles and told to find God.
.
We had to develop a safety plan.
.
We had to work with the local police department.
.
We had to hire outside security for protection.
.
All because we wanted to discuss a book.
.
All because we wanted to defend a book.
.
But we did anyway.
.
Our community came together once again for #BannedBookClub to read, discuss, share, listen, learn and grow.
.
I will forever be grateful for this team and this community. taken in Anderson's Bookshop by @kmarch67

Our 2nd annual Banned Book Read In is in the books (see what I did there?) A day of education, healthy-ish "debates" and the requisite being called "weirdos" means it was a successful day. Thanks to everyone who took shifts reading!

It started with a book.
.
The book became a spark.
The spark became an idea.
The idea became a plan.
The plan became a community.
.
And here we are 2+ years later, 24 books later, still coming together once a month to read, talk about and learn from banned books.
.
When we ban books we lose those sparks. We lose ideas. We lose community. So as long as books are being banned, as long as censorship is a threat, we will be here defending books; defending your right to read, to be seen and represented in stories. We will be defending and uplifting our community.
.
Thank you @kirstenmillerbooks and your #luladeanslibraryofbannedbooks for being our spark.

When Kim Namjoon tells me to "Put your phone down, let's get all the fun" I pay attention. So while I may not have a phone full of photos and videos, I have something more precious- a heart filled with beautiful memories.
.
I became ARMY in 2020. I've seen jhope twice, Yoongi once. Friday was my first ot7 concert. I left the Casita at 1:40pm and got back at 1:36 am. During those 12 hours I lived a lifetime.
.
I saw old friends and made new ones.
.
I celebrated with the couple behind me who got engaged during Into The Sun.
.
I sang, I danced.
.
I laughed, I cried.
.
I nearly walked the soles of my shoes off.
.
All because of 7 soulmates from South Korea.

Recently two books have resonated with me in ways that feel especially connected and pushed me to reread a classic favorite of mine. They remind me that change can start with one person, one voice, one small step. And I have to tell you about them.
.
Better Good by @scottmcurran is exactly what I think we all need right now. In a world that feels more divided than ever, he brings us back to what matters most: making our communities better one step at a time.
.
You don't have to be a celebrity with unlimited resources and millions of followers to make an impact. The world is filled with "hometown heroes", ordinary people creating extraordinary change in their own backyards. Better Good gives us the motivation, courage and practical tools to become hometown heroes within our communities.
.
(Pssssttt...there's still time to reserve your tickets for Scott's launch event at Anderson's in Downers Grove on 8/25. Link in my bio.)
.
It has been weeks since I finished This Is What Happens When Women Read by @juliannaglasse and this book is STILL perched on my soul. Triumph and empowerment are exactly how I would describe both Julianna's story AND her mission to help women find themselves, find their voice and reclaim their autonomy.
.
Julianna did what her heart and soul called her to do. She took what she had endured and used that triumph of reclamation to create change in her world, just as Scott encourages us to do in Better Good.
.
Now if you've known me for longer than 3 minutes, you've heard me say that The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore should be required reading for every human. I was not at all surprised to learn how Elizabeth Packard's story had influenced Julianna. I also couldn't help but think that if Packard were alive today, she would be exactly the kind of hometown hero Scott writes about in Better Good.
.
Three books. Three very different stories. But at their hearts they all have the same message: find your voice, believe you can make a difference and go be the hometown hero your community needs right now.
.
Happy reading y'all. by @kmarch67
