🧶 Visualising air quality data through the power of knitting
📊 Data from @londonbreathecommunity
🪡 Made by 130+ knitters in Poplar, Tower Hamlets
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
💙🩷 Knitting the Air: The Exhibition is Open! 🩷💙

At its centre is our knitted air quality data from Poplar, made by over a 100 people who live here.

Taking thousands of hours to make, it’s a profound statement of care for the air this community breathes and the people who call this place home. So much love went into making this. This exhibition honours that labour, giving it space and attention it so richly deserves.

Come and visit us!

🩷 On until the 20 September
💙 Tuesday to Sunday
🩷 10am - 4pm
💙 Nunnery Gallery, 181 Bow Road, E3 2SJ

So many thank yous to come for everyone who helped bring this exhibition into being. But for now, thank you to the knitters who are and always will be absolute legends.

✨THE BIG REVEAL✨

Last week, we finally displayed all our knitted air quality data at an exclusive preview in Poplar, Tower Hamlets for the very first time.

We’ve always had the rule that whenever we’ve completed some data, it is shown in Poplar first. This work was made here, by local knitters and is about the air they breathe every day. Their collective efforts (over 5000+ hours of solid knitting time) is a powerful statement of care, community and commitment to raise awareness about air pollution.

Beyond proud of the knitters and people who have stuck with this project for over two years. What started as an idea and a couple of knitted squares has grown into something beyond anything we could have ever imagined. It’s such a magical moment when the knitters see how all their hard work has come together and how their efforts are so appreciated by the wider community.

So many more photos, thank yous and stories to share from the night. Still processing it all but for now - marvel in what they have created. A whole years worth of knitted air quality data from Poplar 🩷💙

It was a great experience to work with @carolinelucymur to facilitate a series of photography walks alongside her wonderful exhibition @knittingtheair last month at the Nunnerie gallery in Bow.
Witnessing first hand her determination and hard work to present air pollution data in a creative and engaging way was such an enriching experience.
I enjoyed meeting everyone who attending the walk and seeing how they capture this very busy and polluted area, navigating the noisy roads but also these little pockets of nature. Each walk brought new insights but also different weather and lighting, it was great to capture the different transport modes using this busy area, I never predicted to encounter a horse carriage but it was such a great surprise to see it!
Thank you again Caroline for the opportunity to work with you, I learnt so much from you!
Thank you to everyone who came and shared their beautiful pictures with us!

And that’s a wrap 🥲

Final weekend of Knitting the Air: The Exhibition is complete.

Thanks all who came to visit us this weekend, and over the last few weeks. It’s gone so fast, and yet feels like it was a million years ago that we installed.

Tomorrow we pack all the knitting up, after which will be getting some much needed rest and then start sifting through all the stories and photos from the last few weeks.

🩷💙Many Names 💙🩷

Sharing another new piece created for Knitting the Air: The Exhibition.

Hand knitted in yarn, this work contains all the names of those who so generously gave their time and skill to knit data about air pollution.

Whether it was a couple of rows or hundreds of squares, everyone gets a credit and all their contributions are valued. Also included are some special mentions to those whose support for the project was invaluable.

This work is on display alongside our knitted data, putting the people who are the heart and soul of Knitting the Air front and centre.

This is the last weekend of our exhibition - closing Sunday! Come and visit us

Many Hands X Many Voices

Introducing new work created for our show, twinned pieces of audio and film featuring our knitters.

Many Hands is a video montage of the knitters doing what they do best, from the knitters eye view. Moving from one to the next, watch in real time how Knitting the Air was made, by the very hands that created it.

Many Voices is a collection of audio stories, taken from interviews with a selection of our knitters. In their own words, they share the process of knitting data about the air they breathe, the meaning this process held for them, and what they hope visitors take away from the exhibition.

Together, they invite you to reflect on what Knitting the Air means to the people who made this work.

It’s been so lovely watching people take the time to sit with these two pieces. We deliberately placed them at the end of the exhibition, so they’re the last thing our visitors experience before heading out into the world.

📍 Knitting the Air is open now until 20th September
🕙 10am 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday
📍 Nunnery Gallery, 181 Bow Road, E3 2SJ

Come and experience it for yourself before it closes. taken in Nunnery Gallery by @knittingtheair

What a lovely group we had for our first Photography Walk this weekend just gone with @gbs10_portrait 📸.

Swipe to see some photo from Sylvie as the group gets out and about, exploring through the lens of their camera different spaces around the @nunnerygallery and how they connect to air.

In quite a small area you have everything from old church yards, pockets of green, the infamous Bow Roundabout and fly over (where the A12/A11 cross) and even the River Lea - London’s second largest river.

We’ve got more Photography Walks planned in the next few weeks (our next is tomorrow 4.30 - 6.30pm) - head to the link in our bio to book!
