It was a great experience to work with @carolinelucymur to facilitate a series of photography walks alongside her wonderful exhibition @knittingtheair last month at the Nunnerie gallery in Bow.
Witnessing first hand her determination and hard work to present air pollution data in a creative and engaging way was such an enriching experience.
I enjoyed meeting everyone who attending the walk and seeing how they capture this very busy and polluted area, navigating the noisy roads but also these little pockets of nature. Each walk brought new insights but also different weather and lighting, it was great to capture the different transport modes using this busy area, I never predicted to encounter a horse carriage but it was such a great surprise to see it!
Thank you again Caroline for the opportunity to work with you, I learnt so much from you!
Thank you to everyone who came and shared their beautiful pictures with us!

I’m so happy to have joined this important project and wonderful knitting community at its culmination in the Knitting the Air exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery. Caroline has created such an impactful work, both for the local community, and for awareness of air quality in general. The knitting workshop I facilitated yesterday reminded me of the power of knitters! The exhibition is on until the 20th September so definitely go to see it! @knittingtheair @nunnerygallery #eastlondon #knitting #kniitersruletheworld #knittingdata #originsofprogramming

Yesterday attended the opening of @carolinelucymur incredible exhibition launch for @knittingtheair @nunnerygallery

It’s an incredible project that introduces local people to reading air quality data through knitting. I love hyperlocal & grounded projects like this that demystify the systems and datasets that concern the health of how we exist in our cities.

So often, this information is made difficult to access by the general public through a lack of translation buried within complex documents, technical language and datasets that can feel far removed from our everyday lives, even while describing the air we are breathing.

What happens when people are offered agency through an embodied approach to knowledge production within the city? When data becomes something tactile that can be handled, interpreted and made together?

In areas such as Bow Road and Poplar, where questions of air quality intersect with infrastructure, traffic, development and histories of urban planning, that feels particularly powerful. Rather than simply being the subjects of data, residents become active interpreters and hopefully producers of the environments in
which they live.

There’s something beautiful about taking something as seemingly abstract as air quality data and translating it quite literally through the body into a material record of place.

If you’re in or around East London, I really encourage you to visit @nunnerygallery and spend some time with the work - to see, feel and think through what the air around us can tell us about the places we inhabit.

Day 13 and it's a biggie!
The brainchild AQCN member Caroline Murray - Knitting The Air is an inspired and ambitious project to involve local residents in Poplar in East London in creating a tapestry of a year's worth of air quality data from two nearby Breathe London sensors.
13m of yarn and 5,000 hours of dedication from 132 knitters have created one of the most incredible and physical manifestations of air quality data in London. Seeing it in person really does take your breath away.
After a successful 'Big Reveal' at the Feldy community centre last year Caroline managed to secure Arts Council funding to present the work at Nunnery Gallery from 4 - 20 September 2026. We are looking forward to seeing it in person again. Get yourself along!

Have been following the @knittingtheair project for some time. Amazing work from the lovely Caroline Murray and local residents, many living or working on or around the Aberfeldy Estate. If you’ve ever driven through the Blackwall Tunnel you’ve probably what air pollution is like around there. @londonbreathecommunity helped collect that data and this project helps visualise it, but more importantly get local people on board with how to communicate the problem to those who can influence change. You can see the work and get involved with the programme next month - all workshops are free to join and take place @nunnerygallery

We were delighted to be joined by Breathe London award winners, councillors, parliamentarians, businesses, and clean air groups at Clean Air Fund’s #CleanAirDay parliamentary event this afternoon, sponsored by Liz Twist.

From the Deputy Mayor of London announcing £6million of funding, to the latest findings from CBI on the economic benefits of clean air for the nation, it was an important moment to recognise the vital work being done to improve air quality across the country, but also to highlight that there is much work still to do.

It was fantastic to be joined by Breathe London Award Winners @knittingtheair, @whatsthemattercic , William Byrd Schools and @greatormondst Hospital.

Breathe London is an air quality measuring network supported by the @mayorofldn and @bloombergdotorg that makes real-time pollution data available to the public through its online map.

The programme is delivered by a consortium of partners with expertise in air quality technology, data and engagement: @vodafonethree, Global Action Plan, @airlyorg, CERC, @wearericardo and Scotswolds. Breathe London is part of @breathecities, a global initiative delivered by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Clean Air Fund, and @c40cities , supporting cities to clean the air and enhance public health.

Head to www.breathelondon.org to find out more.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today!
