Whatever you choose to call it, plant distillation is a never ending, beautiful experiment.

I have distilled for same chemotype of mugwort (Artemisia Douglasiana), for over 6 years and only one time, has it been blue.

One of the most interesting things about distillation is how we can explore it so vastly. The process pulls out different chemical compounds from plants. Essential and hydrosol, the 2 products of distillation, can have vastly different chemical compounds. Plants also produce different chemical compounds during different times of the year, parts of growing process, location and environmental factors.

The blue you see in essential oils is called Chamazulene. The color is not present in the living plant, it is a natural, chemical reaction from the heat and steam process. Chamazulene is compound that is anti inflammatory and an antioxidant and wonderful for skincare.

I distill mainly for hydrosol. I usually distill Mugwort later in season, when it flowers for a stronger aroma. This particular year I made it before flowering stage. I read studies that show how there is a Chamazulene spike during pre-flowering phase. So that would be when you distill for the blue. It’s truely such an art to document the time, location, moon phases, plant growth phases, environment and more, to keep learning everyday.

The contentment I feel when processing plants is such a special feeling. It forces you to slow down and really move through all the motions, emotions and just feel everything around you. I wish I could afford to take more time to slow down and be with it. Life is so fast these days. Sitting with plants is the best. by @kodifujii

Pumpkin update! 🎃October 10th. Weight off day was yesterday and it was so cute.

I just want to mention, this contest started small between friends and family and has turned into something very special for our little town thanks to @nicool_e_oh and @earthrainbro . We are all just hobby pumpkin growers, not professionals growing thousands of pounders but it still brings great joy to us all!

Falon, my partner @hundred_waves_of_wolves won people choice, Queen Francine was 364 pounds. But the real winner 🥇 was Donut just under 500! Graham’s first time joining us and a rightful winner. Donut was stunning!

Tulsi AKA Holy Basil! She’s the queen of queens! I wish I could send smells through the phone cause if you haven’t smelled her you must! Camphorous, spicy and sweet! It’s like a sweet candy clove smell! Hydrosols are coming finally.
