The heart of Koigu ❤ It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of my mother, Maie Landra, founder of Koigu and an extraordinary artistic visionary. From the very beginning, her goal was never simply to build a business; it was to explore color, fiber, and the art of knitting in a way that was uniquely her own.

Many of you have experienced her warmth and enthusiasm throughout your crafting journey. If you have any stories or memories of Maie that you would like to share, we would be grateful to hear them as we collectively mourn her loss.

Maie passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at the age of 87, in Owen Sound Hospital, surrounded by the beauty of her family farm, Koigu, in Chatsworth, Ontario. Originally from Tartu, Estonia, she infused her heritage into every aspect of her life and work. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harry, and is lovingly remembered by her family and the many friends and extended family who were touched by her life.

As a graduate of the Ontario College of Art in 1960, Maie's artistic spirit found expression in numerous forms. As a founding member and first Vice-President of the Estonian Arts Council, she moved through the world with a creative eye, capturing beauty and possibility wherever she went. Her enduring love for trees influenced her art, from her collection Immortal Wood to her well-loved Koigu Tree Sweater design, and even the trees she planted across her cherished farm.

Maie was relentless in pursuing her vision; she charted her own path with resilience and independence. As an entrepreneur and a pioneer of variegated hand-dyed yarns, she transformed Koigu Wool Designs into a globally recognized name, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire us all.

We appreciate your support and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you for being part of the Koigu family, and for honoring Maie’s remarkable legacy.
