Morning Doodle: “Though he and Zoya took pains to hide the urgency of their mission, they rode hard each day and never spent more than a single night in any location.”(Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH 11)

Artist Notes: By some miracle I ended up having a good chunk of Thursday and Today free to draw/paint for myself, AND I slept two full nights of sleep! Incredible! Life is good!

So for you, sweaty Zoyalai after a day’s worth of riding 😌✨

Zoya is letting Nikolai know what time they should be leaving tomorrow, but we all know a large party never leaves on time 😔

Morning Doodle: Now she looked nothing but annoyed. “Of course I do. Who else would I rather have my back in a fight?” (Leigh Bardugo’s Rule of Wolves CH 23, taken out of context)

Artist Notes: Still getting used to drawing Nikolai with revolvers, since he does use them in some of the King of Scars chapters. While looking through the World of Guns videogame library I thought it was kind of cool how a Webley revolver auto-ejects casings and it evolved into Zoyalai brain rot of course.

Morning Doodle: “She wasn’t a naive girl anymore, desperately trying to prove herself at every turn. She was a general with a long body count and an even longer memory.” (Leigh Bardugo's King of Scars CH 11)

Artist Notes: Wasn’t too loaded with work, so I went a bit extra today! Wish I could do this every day, but hey I’ll take what I can get.

I had an idea of another grisha losing their kefta and Zoya giving them hers (since she can stop bullets herself) and I was gonna add them in trailing behind her and fighting, but I’m trying not to cram too much stuff into compositions these days.

Morning Doodle: “But no, her captor’s wings were vast mechanical marvels of engineering that beat the sky as they rose higher.” (Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH 12)

Artist Notes: I fcked up pretty much everything I planned and then my self-imposed Saturday Morning Deadline fell on top of me and I just had to scramble to make it look like I meant to go this direction. 😂

One of my art instructors back in the day called this activity “rescuing the sketch” because we were all encouraged to draw in our sketchbooks in ink and would just have to accept any botched cards we were dealt and learn how to play them.

“ZOYA!” Something had hold of her—something with wings, and for a moment Nikolai wondered if somehow the demon had leapt from his very skin. (Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH 12)

Artist Notes: Included a value blockout today! Rare that I ever draw Zoya or Nikolai with an expression that isn’t “smug” or “irritated,” so I just wanted to do a portrait shot to focus on Nikolai’s face. If you’re wondering what the curved lines are in the black and white blockout, it’s me vaguely using the Reilly method to give the head some form and rhythm.

Morning Doodle: “Huge hands grasped Zoya’s shoulders, digging into her flesh, lifting her from the ground. She kicked her feet, feeling the terrible sensation of nothing beneath her. Zoya screamed as she was pulled skyward, the rose still clutched in her hand.” (Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH 11)

Artist Notes: This one was a STRUGGLE. I tried like a thousand different poses. One hand holding Zoya, both hands holding Zoya, digging into shoulders, holding her entire torso, Zoya facing the khergud soldier, Zoya facing away from the kherhud soldier, Zoya pressed against khergud soldier, Zoya held at a distance, every camera angle in existence, I am pretty much in the “I accept defeat” stage of this image and that’s okay, sometimes you just have to just pick an angle and hope for the best 🏃‍♀️

Morning Doodle: “Movement on the roof of the cathedral caught Zoya’s eye. She looked up in time to see something massive rushing toward her. It smashed through Lizabeta’s statue, sending petals and shards of stone flying.” (Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH 11)

Artist Notes: Meant to finish this one last week but needed to give myself a bit of extra time. Was kind of a pain in the ass on every front, but the point of these is to illustrate book prompts that challenge me and keep me in the art-making habit, so let’s goooooooo

Morning Doodle: Church of Sankta Elizaveta Ref

Artist Notes: Mainly for myself, just trying to establish where everybody is and what the windows/domes/scaffolding look like for upcoming panels. I have hinted at these in previous panels, but I realized I should shift some things around, figure out what colors I’m using and add some hiding spots.

Morning Doodle: Nikolai Gun Design and Holster Reference

…Why is there a lipstick mark on the barrel? Who knows, maybe Nikolai jokingly asked Zoya to kiss it for luck the other night and she was drunk enough to oblige.

Artist Notes: Spent the last few weeks mulling it over and I ended up combining the elements I liked the most in a Ruger Redhawk (like the cylinder release and hammer shape etc) with a Colt Python and adding some gold elements and a warm wood grip to make it feel old-money enough for a Lantsov but practical enough for Nikolai. Also to differentiate it from Jesper’s Pearl Revolvers (though it would be funny for Nikolai to have pearl handles since Sturmhond has that “I’m the Pearl” line). Also tried to design a holster that could be hidden under a jacket. Revolvers are kinda harder to hide than pistols. I had to tilt the holsters so the guns sit more vertical, I think that works better than the more horizontal position I was drawing them in before.

Morning Doodle: “The stink of blood hung heavy in the coach.” (Leigh Bardugo’s King of Scars CH2)

Artist Notes: Thinks he didn’t do anything wrong bringing home a fresh goose. One day he’ll learn how to behave…Maybe?

Stressed about the future lately, simple portrait of our Demon and our Saint today.

Morning Doodle: “Fine.”

Artist Notes: A tiny moment, insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Morning Doodle: “I am going to kill you.” “So long as you kiss me again before you do.” (Leigh Bardugo’s Rule of Wolves CH 46)

*Quote taken out of context, but I think we all know they would say this on the regular

Artist Notes: Uhhh I still need to find time to design the Khergud, so you guys get cold weather Zoyalai today. It’s also to counteract the summer heat 🙂‍↕️
