Encountered on the Street: 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe.

Almost 90 years old, and still out on the road.
The 1938 Master Deluxe came from an era when Chevrolet was building straightforward, durable American transportation with a surprising amount of style. Under the hood was a 216.5 cubic inch inline six producing 85 horsepower, paired with a three speed manual transmission.

What really stands out today is the design. Separate fenders. Running boards. A massive chrome grille. Round headlights. Bench seating. Analog gauges. Everything feels mechanical, visible, and intentional.
And 1938 was an especially interesting year for General Motors. That same year, Harley Earl’s Buick Y Job debuted as what GM calls the world’s first concept car, showing just how quickly automotive design was beginning to evolve.

Cars like this Chevrolet were what people actually drove while the future of the automobile was being imagined.

That is what makes seeing one in person so much more interesting than simply looking at an old car.

The 2026 Rolls Royce Ghost Series II might be one of the best examples of quiet luxury on the road today.

A 6.75 liter twin turbo V12, all wheel drive, all wheel steering, and Rolls Royce’s Planar Suspension System give the Ghost the effortless ride you expect, but there is another side to this car too.

Rolls Royce specifically engineered Ghost to be its most driver focused V12 model, with technology that can read the road ahead and prepare the suspension before the car ever reaches an imperfection.

And then there is the design.
Nothing feels overdone. The proportions are clean, the Pantheon grille and Spirit of Ecstasy give it unmistakable presence, and the cabin is exactly what a Rolls Royce should be: quiet, beautifully finished, and almost completely removed from the world outside.

The Ghost does not try to prove anything.

It simply arrives.

Mercato after dark. Apparently, the parking is part of the entertainment. 🍊🏎️

An orange Lamborghini Huracán and a red Ferrari SF90 made this Naples night out worth a longer walk. The Ferrari’s low nose and black roof look particularly good under the restaurant lights. Then the Lamborghini answers with that black hood, sharp bodywork, and a rear wing that’s doing absolutely nothing to keep things subtle.

Two very different approaches to arriving quietly. Neither successful.

Ford got the Bronco formula right the first time. This 1966 example makes a pretty convincing case.

1966 was the Ford Bronco’s first model year. Ford entered a market already occupied by Jeep and the International Scout, aiming to combine off-road capability with better everyday usability. Buyers could choose an open Roadster, a half-cab pickup, or a Wagon.

This one’s pale mint paint, white soft top, chrome trim, and cream interior feel perfectly suited to Naples. The painted dashboard, pleated seats, and thin steering wheel give you plenty to appreciate before you even start driving.

The car you drive every day should be something you actually look forward to driving.

This 2024 BMW X5 xDrive40i makes a strong case. A 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six delivers 375 horsepower, with xDrive all wheel drive and an eight speed automatic. For everyday use, I think the 40i sits right in the sweet spot of the X5 lineup.

This example keeps the look classic with white paint, a silver grille, and silver wheels. Inside, BMW’s Curved Display brings the cabin into a much more modern era. An easy fit for Naples, whether the destination is Fifth Avenue or somewhere a few hours away.

Weekend plans? Something outdoors. With 470 horsepower. For my wellbeing.

This purple 2026 Jeep Wrangler MOAB 392 packs a 6.4 liter HEMI V8 producing 470 horsepower and 470 lb ft of torque. Muscle car sound, Wrangler character, and a very convincing reason to take the long way home.

What I like about this one is that the color matches the personality. A V8 Wrangler was already an enthusiastic decision. Ordering it in purple feels like fully committing.

Mountain getaway or a weekend around Naples, this would make leaving the house considerably more interesting. Are you taking the MOAB 392 or a Bronco Raptor?

2026 GMC Yukon XL Denali Ultimate Diesel.

This is not the Yukon most people expect.

This might be one of the most overlooked luxury convertibles.

2023 Mercedes Benz E 450 Cabriolet.

Silver exterior.

Blue soft top.

Cream and blue interior.

Open pore wood trim.

And one of those cabins that looks dramatically better with the roof down.

Underneath it all is Mercedes’ turbocharged 3.0 liter inline six with electric assistance producing 362 horsepower.

It has enough performance to be fun, but this car really makes sense as a comfortable open air grand tourer.

And in Naples, that formula works pretty well.

A Night Out, Part 3.

The Ford GT deserved a little more time because this is one of those cars that still feels special no matter how many exotic cars you see.

Low, wide, unmistakable, and finished in yellow with black stripes.

But then the night ended with something completely different.

A custom Rolls Royce Dawn with a white exterior, orange and white interior, carbon fiber hood, orange coachline, and a yacht inspired wood rear deck.

It is one of the wildest Dawn specs I have seen.

A Night Out, Part 2.

We made a stop at Porsche Studio Naples, and instead of just looking at cars, I ended up racing the Porsche simulator around Imola.

That escalated quickly.

A few laps later, we were back outside and stumbled onto something completely different.

A yellow and black Ford GT.

One of the most recognizable American supercars ever built, sitting right in the middle of Fifth Avenue South like it belonged there.
