Komodos has blessed the start of summer with their new single “Angel of the Heatwave”

“Angel of the Heatwave” creeps in hazily before bursting with the intensity of ominous, mid-July NYC sun. With their second release on House of Feelings Records, Komodos deepen their distinctive footprint on the scene, crafting another post-punk gem rooted in 00’s sleaze that harnesses the essence of greats like Interpol & The National.

Komodos continue to impress & fascinate with their sound, a thick mixture of grunge-leaning guitars over downtown NYC sensibilities & classic indie swells and fades. I’m a big fan of lead singer Taran Dugal’s vocals that remind me of the likes of Mark Lanegan or Nick Cave casting a sad spell, before they take off for the chorus with the quiver & bluster of something off “The Bends.” The track could have easily stayed in the moody feel that was established off the top, & it would’ve been perfectly satisfying; but the harmonic lift in the chorus provides this cathartic release that I love & didn’t expect. There’s some very Johnny Cash in spirit about the band that I can’t quite put into words that makes me very excited for Komodos.

Accompanying the track is a beautiful visualizer directed by Yehoshuah Pierre Sejour that shows an abstraction of the band running through NYC streets, falling in and out of focus. A song that’s a reminder of another long hot summer in the city to come.

“Angel of the Heatwave” is out now on House of Feelings.
