Sometimes a little home facelift goes a long way.

There was a lot of dark veneer. And a lot of brass. On the walls, in the lighting, pretty much everywhere it could possibly go. None of it was necessarily wrong on its own, but together it made the house feel much darker and heavier than it actually is.
Especially because the light here is beautiful.
So the changes were simple: lighter walls, a softer palette, keeping the existing stone floor and replacing the brass lighting with black accents, including the chandelier above the dining table. Nothing dramatic, just enough to let the space breathe a little and the daylight do most of the work.

I added a few before photos into the carousel because, in this case, the amount of veneer deserves some documentation.

Thank you @mayfairwrapping team for amazing work. 💙 taken in Five Palm Jumeirah by @koncept_42

•The Room We Built Around a Screen?•

That’s one question that comes up in every project, no matter how big or small. There’s always at least one room designed around the television.
Our version of the campfire, I guess, just without the conversation, everyone staring at the same point instead of each other.
Everything else revolves around it: sofa, chairs, artwork, us. Even comfort gets measured by it, is this chair comfortable enough to watch TV from.

Slowly, we’ve designed our lives around avoiding silence. Avoiding communication, with each other and with ourselves.
Is this what good design has quietly become? Design that removes friction and maximizes ease, a low-effort, ambient version of togetherness instead of the harder kind that asks us to actually be present with one another and ourselves.
Comfort and connection aren’t automatically the same goal. I don’t think comfort is the villain, that’s too easy. I think we’ve just stopped noticing the trade-off we keep making for it, choosing comfortable defaults by convention, not intention.

What would a living room look like if the brief had always been facing each other, not watchability?

I’m typing this on yet another screen. The irony isn’t lost on me. taken in Dubai, UAE by @koncept_42

•Objects of affection•

These bags were handmade for me, but what I value most is the time inside them: the time it took to think about someone, develop an idea and make something a little whimsical and full of character amid everything else that needed doing. Even with something as simple as a bag, there is something personal about letting an idea take shape slowly, choosing the threads and colours, and knowing you have to wait for it.
If you enjoy the process and like things made as one-offs or in just a few pieces, this one is for you.

Thank you @mrs_milovanovic💙💙💙

•HideOut•

I’m supposed to write about the material choices, stone, wood…. but all I can think about is that the grass really is greener over there. The wind smells of lavender, and the only “noise” comes from birds and crickets. Maybe that explains the choices better anyway: materials that can weather, soften and settle into the landscape not compete with it. by @koncept_42

What I love about Venice the most is ABSENCE OF CONVENIENCE!
Nothing about that city is practical or easy, yet it’s truly magical. Narrow streets, small artisanal shops from the 1800s that sell 150 kinds of handmade and hand-colored paper. I know at least 5 people who’d love that, I’m kind of lucky like that (you know who you are :).
The word “artisanal” really does mean that, and luxury too, the real kind, not what the marketing overlords of mass production are selling us.
Google Pins aren’t always pinning, so you’re forced to peel your eyes off the screen and use your eyes and brain to locate what you’re looking for. And once you peel your eyes off the phone, there’s this sense of overwhelm with details and beauty all around. Floors, ceilings, walls - everything is ornamental, detailed, and beautiful. And then you realize the best decision is to abandon the plan and just wander. Which sometimes brings you to a gondola ride to cross the street (shout out to my gondola companion @monsieurtats ).
Buildings that make space for the old and the new, and beauty in the contrast, not competition. And to earn all this beauty, you must walk, far and long, embracing the August heat, because inconvenience is the price of magic. taken in Venice, Italy by @koncept_42

HideOut - In Progress

Hidden between fields and water, the house remains quiet within the landscape. It blends into its surroundings and follows the rhythm of nature. Inside, the palette shifts towards greens, terracotta and a more playful domestic language. Most importantly, it reflects the nature of the family who will inhabit it.
A reminder that there is no need to shout to be seen or make an impact.
This project is a truly collaborative act with the family. The process has not been rushed, allowing each decision to be intentional-from how the house impacts the surrounding landscape to how every member of the family will move through and experience the space. by @koncept_42

Pause. Notice. Rewrite. Be present.

In Blank Space through Thought Experiments Vol. 3, we continue building Room for Words-exploring what we notice, what we carry, and how it shapes us.

Thank you, @studiothirteen_dxb and @rababtantawy , for giving us the space to unplug, disconnect, dig a little deeper, and be honest with ourselves and others.

•Comfortably Uncomfortable•

In the race for comfort in every corner of our lives, have we optimized too much? Have we made our homes so comfortable that it’s easier to binge an endless stream of bad TV than to be in the world? And how much comfort is too much?
Lately I find myself leaning toward the beautiful, not necessarily the comfortable. I’m not saying I’m right-but I’m starting to think comfort is overrated.
Our ancestors were less comfortable and more engaged-with life and with each other. And us? Life has never been more comfortable than it is now, and yet anxiety, depression, obesity, and laziness have never felt more present.
Maybe the goal isn’t maximum comfort. Maybe it’s to be comfortably uncomfortable-awake, a little challenged, and more alive. taken in Dubai, UAE by @koncept_42

Thought Experiments Vol. 1

On my way to gathering books for this project, I decided to return to the cellular level- to gather words first, to rewrite some stories alone, and others together.

This evening was about those who shared their books, their thoughts, their time, and their attention.
Thank you for offering the first building blocks- the ones that allow me to start shaping an idea that has refused to leave my mind for quite some time.
Thank you, @rababtantawy , for planting the seed and giving me space- and I don’t just mean @studiothirteen_dxb .
Thank you, @kennethsagar & @whimsyflicks_ , for supporting my shenanigans both in front of and behind the lens.
And thank you all for your thoughts- and especially your laughs.

Grateful for people who feel like summer, flowers, and sunshine :) You know who you are. 💙
