After my first (and very challenging) Burning Man—where each day was filled with uncertainty—and a long road trip through northern Mexico, the word safety has been echoing in my mind for weeks.

I began to question my relationships—friendships with both men and women—and asked myself: how many of them actually feel safe? The answer was confronting: not many.

I realized I’ve been pouring so much energy into creating safety for others—especially in my female friendships—that I’ve neglected my own. Too often, I override how I feel, putting their needs above mine, moving through the connection almost blindfolded.

Questions keep circling in my head:

* Where are the boundaries of this connection?
* How do we want to communicate?
* If I don’t message or invite you, does our friendship just fade into a graveyard of memes and stickers?
* Can I open a door for you without it being misread as patriarchal—or worse, manipulative?
* Can I invite you to a movie, or to Tantra Tuesday, without you assuming ulterior motives?
* Can I reach out for support? Can I be vulnerable, share my fears, and still be met as a friend?
* When I check if you got home safe, is it care—or control?

Sometimes I navigate this dance with grace. Other times, it feels like showing up to a tennis court holding only a ping-pong paddle. But I’ve learned: when boundaries are clear, the dance floor opens—and we know how much space we can expand into.

Moving to Ibiza two and a half years ago meant leaving behind decades-long friendships. Most of the people around me now are those I’ve met here in the last couple of years. Some feel like home. Others, like my tent at Burning Man in the rainstorms—fragile and uncertain.

Ibiza is an island of acquaintances. People rarely know where they’ll be next month—or if they’ll even have a place to live for the summer. It makes building deep, consistent relationships challenging.

And so—I’m turning back to me. Archiving the “graveyard chats.” No longer spending energy where it isn’t met with reciprocity.

Because men crave safety too. taken in Valle de Bravo, Mexico by @kondomusic
