Getting an up-close preview in rehearsals of the astonishing, effortless voices of KŌPŪ! 🎶✨ Presented as part of Spiderwoman’s Global Indigenous Theatre Festival, KŌPŪ by Te Pou Theatre (~ Aotearoa / New Zealand) brings slick harmonies, live music, performance, poetry, and poi to La MaMa this week! Back in 1977, for the program of their very first show at La MaMa, Spiderwoman Theater described themselves “as an exuberant, dissonant, satiric, musical, bigger-than-life, clownish, violent, vulnerable, burlesque and occasionally pornographic feminist theatre ensemble.” That same spirit of bold, unapologetic, and transformative Indigenous feminist storytelling shines brightly through KŌPŪ as young wāhine Māori share a cheeky, hilariously honest, and no-holds-barred account of wāhinetanga (womanhood) on their own terms. — CREATIVE TEAM & CAST • Production Company: Te Pou Theatre (@tepoutheatre) • Writer & Performer: Tuakoi Ohia • Director: Amber Curreen • Performers: Tuakoi Ohia, Brady Peeti, Jane Leonard, Ngakirikiri Kershaw, Te Arohanui Way-Korewha & Te Huamanuka Luiten-Apirana • Stage Manager: Teiaro Taikato • Sound Designer: Paige Pomana • Set Designer: John Verryt • Musical Consultant: John Gibson • Lighting Designer: Jane Hakaraia • Originally commissioned by Auckland Arts Festival | Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki — SHOW DATES & DETAILS 🗓️ October 30 – November 1, 2026 📍 La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club ⏱️ Runtime: 75 minutes 🎟️ Part of Spiderwoman’s Global Indigenous Theatre Festival TICKET INFORMATION 🎟️ Standard Ticket: $30 🎟️ 2-Show Package: $40 🎟️ Full Festival Pass (All 5 events): $100 🔗 Get your tickets and festival passes now at the link in bio! 📞 Box Office: 646.430.5374 | boxoffice@lamama.org — #LaMaMaETC #Season65 #ONENESS #KŌPŪ #TePouTheatre Spiderwoman50 GlobalIndigenousTheatreFestival by @kopugals

"Me aro koe ki te hā o Hine-ahu-one" Te Pou Theatre is excited to announce that the wāhine of KŌPŪ 💋 have been invited to perform in New York 🗽 this October as part of the Spiderwoman Theater 50th Anniversary celebrations! ❤️‍🔥✊🏽 The foremothers of Indigenous feminist theatre, Spiderwoman Theater was established in Brooklyn 1976 by Muriel Miguel and her sisters Gloria Miguel and Lisa Mayo. This trailblazing troupe was the foundational force of Indigenous theatre and queer Indigenous voices around the world 🌏💫, inspiring artists in Turtle Island, Australia and Aotearoa to use contemporary theatre as a platform for amplifying Indigenous storytelling and advocating for Indigenous rights. Spiderwoman Theater have spread their Story Weaving theatre-making methodology around the world and this October they will weave together Global Indigenous performances in celebration of this incredible milestone. 🙏🏽 Nō mātou te whiwhi, nō mātou te waimārie! Leave your white feminisim at the door xx Kōpū is the place to be for your winter evenings in Ōtautahi Christchurch. "From their initial entrance singing slick six part harmonies, resplendent in luminous lycra leggings and unapologetically loud, these wāhine will not be silenced. The patriarchy can quiet down and take a seat."- Ruth Agnew, Flat City Field Notes Must close 26 July. by @kopugals
Kōpū opens in 5 days! And we cannot wait to have these wonderful wāhine on The Court Theatre stage. A bit of history! Kōpū was originally commissioned by Auckland Arts Festival for presentation in 2022. Following COVID delays the piece was workshopped over 2021-2022 and premiered in May 2023 by Te Pou Theatre. Kōpū was then presented by Kia Mau Festival in June 2023 with support from Creative New Zealand. The show has since had a return season at Te Pou Theatre and toured to other theatres and festivals across Aotearoa New Zealand. And The Court Theatre is lucky enough to be the next on the list!
