My most tender birthday, by a dusty mile. 4 weeks ago, I lost my father. Not wanting to learn about my father’s passing from an ocean away, I made the choice to spend my entire summer on this side of the pond. I left the US for Sicily as spring turned into summer, and I will only be back in time to move to Shelter Island at the height of fall. Between short trips to Europe, I spent the vast majority of my summer at my father’s bedside. Despite deeply missing my community and very much looking forward to moving to Shelter Island, I am so glad I made the choice to spend my summer the way I have and am deeply grateful for my ability to do so. I am committing to being a better, softer, kinder human, in service of a more beautiful, more just world. To leaving all people, places and things better than I found them. Also, to leaving behind some people of my own. Inshallah. I look forward to coming back to the US after a summer away and to NY after a decade away. Come find me somewhere, sometime soon. My father left this world surrounded by some 50 of his offspring and loved ones. We spent the last 17 hours of his life singing to him, bidding our farewell, deeply loving on him and one another. We spent the last 17 hours of his life singing to him, bidding our farewell, deeply loving on him and one another. A holy portal for a holy man. #grief #deathbed #farewell #father #goodbye A descendant of an unbroken lineage of sages and scholars dating all the way back to Abraham, my father is survived by my mother, their 6 kids, 35 grandkids and 8 great-grandkids. Dozens found in my aba a father figure, a lighthouse and a north star. A brilliant and successful engineer, my father dedicated the vast majority of his earnings toward personally supporting dozens of others, initiating and championing worthy causes and donating to those in need. He dedicated his retirement years to his spiritual pursuit. My father’s legacy of generosity, impact and service lives on. Every single one of my father’s kids and grown grandkids went on to incorporate service into our lives. Building communities, championing causes and supporting many others. My mom, 74, still volunteers weekly. My father’s decline over the last 18 months had me say goodbye to him in pieces. I thought that this gradual goodbye would make the final goodbye easier. As if taking a few buckets full of water out of an ocean would make it any less deep. Spoiler: It wouldn’t. Most other years, I’d be spending this week in the meta ceremony that is Burning Man. This year I spent the exact week of the burn in the grief ceremony that is sitting shiva. My father passed on Sunday, the day the gates opened, and his shiva closed the next Sunday, the day the temple burned. In time, I plan to write about this genius grief template called Shiva and its many wise traditions- from mourners not cooking their own food to physically being pulled back to life upon the shiva completion. After some 18 months of so much travel it’s been really nice to deeply ground in the mountains of Park City.
