A Mysuru Bakery Tradition Since 1949!

In Mysuru for Dasara? There’s plenty to discover beyond restaurants.
Azeezia Bakery dates back to 1949, and several generations later, the family is still making the baked treats and milk-based sweets that have become part of Mysuru’s food memory.

The Khoa Dilpasand was the first thing that caught my attention, with its flaky pastry and rich milk-based filling.

Mr. Chengappa. A Man Who Lets His Work Do the Talking.

Good to do a Jayanagar breakfast with the boys after ages at Taaza Thindi. The food, as always, was spot on. Consistent each time I’ve been there.

But this post isn’t so much about Taaza Thindi or its food. It’s about the gentleman in the hat, Mr. Chengappa.

You may have seen him, or you may not have. He goes about his work quietly with his team, but come rain or shine, he’s always there. And I think it’s thanks to him and his team that you have the experience you have at Taaza Thindi.

Mr. Chengappa is the sort of restaurateur you probably won’t find on podcasts or see building a personal brand on social media. His presence is felt where it matters most: on the shop floor, working alongside his team and setting an example through his own quiet diligence.

In an industry that often celebrates celebrity chefs, viral dishes and restaurateurs in the spotlight, there are so many like Mr. Chengappa who keep the wheels turning, day after day, without asking for recognition.

They may not always get the recognition they deserve, but their work speaks for itself. And in this case, it’s been speaking through the kind of tiffin tindi we’ve grown to love at Taaza Thindi over the last 12 years.

Kudos, Mr. Chengappa, and to the many like him who go about their work in this space quietly, without a song.

Salute. 🙏

Coffee in a Palace?

In Mysuru for Dasara? Take a little time out from the festivities for coffee.

Inside the Green Hotel, once the Chittaranjan Palace, Malgudi Coffee is the kind of place where you don’t just stop for a cup! You sit down, take your time and enjoy the atmosphere.
A coffee, something baked, and a little bit of another era. One more stop on my day of eating out in Mysuru.

Visiting Mysuru for Dasara? There’s one iconic breakfast you shouldn’t miss.

At Vinayaka Mylari, the famous soft, buttery dosa has been part of Mysuru’s food story for generations. The dosa is served with a distinctive vegetable saagu rather than the usual potato stuffing.

This is one stop on my day of eating out in Mysuru, exploring the city’s traditional vegetarian food. Watch the full Mysuru Dasara special on the Food Lovers TV YouTube channel! Link in bio.

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about a hot, home-style meal served on a banana leaf, especially when it comes with steaming rice, sambar, and some spicy fish fries!

At Vanitha Mess in Gonikoppal, South Kodagu, you get just that. The vegetarian meal is delicious at just ₹80, while the fish curry and fries are an absolute must if you enjoy seafood.

And behind this inspiring all-women initiative is Mrs. Shobhana Gautam, an army officer’s wife.

A lovely stop to bookmark when you’re travelling through South Kodagu.

From a home kitchen to a highway eatery. ❤️
On a recent drive back from Madikeri, I stopped at Hunsur Bedare’s Kitchen, a rustic little eatery on the Hunsur highway that turned out to have a wonderful family story behind it.
What started with a request for a home-cooked meal grew into catering and, eventually, their own kitchen. Today, the whole family is involved, cooking traditional recipes passed down through generations.

There was plenty to taste: Kaal Soup, Kshatriya Kabab, Katla Fish Fry, Khaima Unde with Ragi Mudde, Mutton Chops, Mutton Pulao and more.

But what stayed with me was the warmth of the family, the food they’ve grown up with, and the story behind how this unassuming highway stop came to be.

Swipe through the carousel and, if you’d like to see the full story, the episode is now on Food Lovers TV YouTube. 🎥Link in bio and story.

Whenever I used to ride through Krishnagiri, this Saravana Bhavan was a regular stop. It had been a while, so this trip was a chance to revisit an old favourite.

Steaming hot idli, Tamil-style sambar, podi with gingelly oil, coconut and tomato chutneys, and that wonderfully crisp, onion-and-pepper-laced vadai.

That vadai still hits the spot. 😋

Some food memories are worth returning to.

There are some places where the food is only part of the story. Mangaluru’s Car Street is one of them.

@abhishek.p.shetty.3 and I spent an evening at Gokul Charmuri, where Gokul has been serving his take on this much-loved Mangalurean snack for 16 years. From the old-fashioned charmuri once sold at village fairs to his loaded versions and the distinctive boiled-rice charmuri made with rice from Kundapura, there was plenty to taste.

We also tried the Mangaluru cucumber salad and raw mango pachodi, while Gokul shared the story of how a demolished street cart eventually led him to his own shop and a permanent address.

But what stayed with us was the atmosphere - the people dropping by, the conversations, the traffic flowing past and the easygoing rhythm of an evening on Car Street.

Car Street. Charmuri. Conversations. That’s Mangaluru. ❤️

Before the first guest is served, a GSB wedding feast already tells you a story. ❤️

A roundup of the dishes prepared for this traditional GSB oota in Mangaluru, an incredible spread of flavours, textures and preparations, all waiting to make their way onto the banana leaf.

There’s something quite special about seeing a wedding feast come together like this.

Thank you once again @the_biryani_merchant for inviting me and allowing this kitchen access. 😋🙏
