Soon, we'll need an award for awards. How do you judge who is the fairest of them all? I spoke to a bunch of people outside the ecosystem, who spend quite a bit of money on eating out and want to discover new and/or reliable restaurants. And the answer I got was resounding: no discovery. Like any old-fashioned critic, an award gets cred if it offers freshness, insight and truthfulness in and about who it champions. But if it is slow, second hand opinion garnered at least partly via impressions of popularity online, it means nothing. Having your ear to the ground with a measure of expertise, and then staking your reputation on something or someone not yet annointed is what diners with so much access already to restaurants and their reputations want. Who gets awarded says as much about the jury and awarding establishments as about the restaurants. And the best awards must have some best practices. There are three that are a must.
