Hey Friends,

I wanted to share something with you all that is very close to my heart.
For those who are unaware, Sydney Singer-Songwriter Jesse Younan was one of the country’s brightest artists. He released a bunch of songs to critical acclaim before being diagnosed with Leukaemia.
After his courageous battle, Jesse passed away in 2008.
His brother Emad, along with others from Jesse’s community, has continued to share Jesse’s music by holding yearly tribute shows showcasing local artists doing their own versions of Jesse’s wonderful songs.

I was invited to record 2 of Jesse Younans works last year by the good folks at Sabre Sound Studios.
I chose “Migraine” and “Queeny” because they’re two of Jesse’s songs that have stayed with me over the many years I have been involved with the Jesse Younan Tribute concerts.

Rather than trying to recreate his versions, I wanted to take the songs somewhere that felt natural. I wanted to sing them in my own voice while still honouring what made them special.

Recording them felt like I was a translator in a conversation with Jesse and the world. Both works showcase the signature emotional honesty that Ive always loved in Jesse’s writing. His songs have a way of bringing darkness to light. They ask more from us than just blind hope. They ask us to really dig into the dirt and grit of real life. These are the foundations of storytelling that have come to mean a great deal to me. My hope is that in a small way, we’re keeping these songs alive.

I’ve released these songs on OCTOBER 15 in line with the Jesse Younan Tribute Concert being held at the Brunswick Ballroom TONIGHT.
All proceeds form the concert, as well as from the sale of the download on Bandcamp, will go towards the Leukaemia Foundation.

‘Migraine’ and ‘Queeny’ are two songs that have stayed with me for the many years Ive been involved with the Jesse Younan concerts and recording them in my own style has been a way of acknowledging the influence Jesse’s music has had on me, and so
many Independent artists around the country.
The release will coincide with the tribute concert, bringing together musicians, friends and Jesse’s wider community to celebrate his work and legacy.
All proceeds from the single release will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation

THE BRUNSWICK BALLROOM came to life last night with beautiful contributions from so many artists for the Jesse Younan Tribute Concert.
Being involved with this project over the years has given me so much joy. The music and interpretations of Jesse’s songs always moves me deeply. The love and care that each artist brings to these songs is always so evident and there is so much reverence in the room for this very special legacy.
What stood out to me most last night was this beautiful community that has built over the years. Folks who come together each year for this joint purpose of keeping Jesse’s songs alive. A mission driven by @emadyounan and brought to life by visionaries @romina_carmen and @kerriemorgan24 sees that this is not just a ‘covers gig’. It’s a collaboration of spirit, nurture, creativity and homage. Bringing new artists into the fold this year has been so great and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.
Huge thanks to the @thebrunswickballroom and to all involved on what I reckon was the best Jesse Younan Tribute show in Melbourne yet!!

For our first Forest Folk shoot featuring an Australian-based artist, it was pretty special to have my pal @kris.mizzi join me before his show with @thosefolk at @pearcescreekhall. Kris and I both performed at @woodfordfolkfestival this year and played a show together in Melbourne in January. He’s an incredible songwriter, lyricist and vocalist and I’ve always admired the narrative and storytelling in his music.

The first time I heard him sing was at our Melbourne show, and his voice was so impressive that it made me feel like I needed to step up my game! I had a sore throat, and while I would love to say that it was because I had sung my heart out the previous night in Sydney, the truth was……I swallowed too much seawater snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef 😂 (tell me you’re a tourist without telling me you’re a tourist) So I walked around Northcote until I found a shop to buy tea to soothe my vocal cords.

Through the editing process I became quite fond of this song. Thank you to Kris for joining me in the woods to play some music under a giant fig tree in NSW.

Home again and back to work, after a truly blissful 6 show sojourn of SE QLD with @thosefolk.
Usually, after a whirlwind trip like this one, I’m exhausted and depleted, but as Lawrence dropped me back at Brissie airport after the slow moving crawl along the blocked Bruce Hwy, listening to @sarahjarosz and talking all things music and the universe, I felt like I could quite happily go another round with these two.

Good fortune and the spirit of community followed us all the way along our trip as supporters flocked and wished us well.
Kindness and generosity in Draper, Coolum Beach, Pearces Creek, West End Brissie, Eudlo and Cooran saw that each of us were fed in body, heart and spirit.
Even the van, when the clutch dropped out, had the courtesy of breaking down right outside the venue we were playing that night. A week of little miracles.

We wanna thank so many folks for helping us make this trip so memorable and when the road ahead threatened to dim and fade, kept our paths lit with love and support.

All the volunteers and venue hosts. All those who offered us a bed and made us feel welcomed in your home. Drove us from airports, shared food, water (and cacao) 😊

All the tireless work of those who promoted and sold tickets. Forest folks who showed us the magic of the local wilderness. All those who extended out to sing along, shared our music and laughter and wished us well. Huge love and thanks to you all.
