Hey Friends,
I wanted to share something with you all that is very close to my heart.
For those who are unaware, Sydney Singer-Songwriter Jesse Younan was one of the country’s brightest artists. He released a bunch of songs to critical acclaim before being diagnosed with Leukaemia.
After his courageous battle, Jesse passed away in 2008.
His brother Emad, along with others from Jesse’s community, has continued to share Jesse’s music by holding yearly tribute shows showcasing local artists doing their own versions of Jesse’s wonderful songs.
I was invited to record 2 of Jesse Younans works last year by the good folks at Sabre Sound Studios.
I chose “Migraine” and “Queeny” because they’re two of Jesse’s songs that have stayed with me over the many years I have been involved with the Jesse Younan Tribute concerts.
Rather than trying to recreate his versions, I wanted to take the songs somewhere that felt natural. I wanted to sing them in my own voice while still honouring what made them special.
Recording them felt like I was a translator in a conversation with Jesse and the world. Both works showcase the signature emotional honesty that Ive always loved in Jesse’s writing. His songs have a way of bringing darkness to light. They ask more from us than just blind hope. They ask us to really dig into the dirt and grit of real life. These are the foundations of storytelling that have come to mean a great deal to me. My hope is that in a small way, we’re keeping these songs alive.
I’ve released these songs on OCTOBER 15 in line with the Jesse Younan Tribute Concert being held at the Brunswick Ballroom TONIGHT.
All proceeds form the concert, as well as from the sale of the download on Bandcamp, will go towards the Leukaemia Foundation.
