The magic of early morning sunrise walks discovering the wildflowers in the countryside. Love wandering the lanes and the hills near our home - always with one of our dogs (three of them rescued as abandoned puppies).

In no 6 where I hold up a wild Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) you can see our home in the background. A highlight of this month will be when all the rock roses - Cistus - start blooming away (last image) xx

I can’t help collecting nature treasures on my walks… Amongst drying flowers, seeds gathered from the garden, I have little boxes full of feathers, shells, bird nests, egg shells, butterfly and moth wings. Most of the nests are from my garden - blown off tree branches in the Autumn wind. One day my son found and brought me an orange and black butterfly he had found on the ground - it was a Monarch butterfly!

A quiet moment with a flower tea. In (1 ) and (4) I have an October collection with Dahlias and flowers blooming in my garden, vintage books, my nature finds including the Monarch.

(2) and (6) Dahlia ‘ Fairway Spur’ and pink Pom Pom dahlias behind them - cloudy but still waiting for rain!
(3) My studio

(5) I’ve sighted Monarch butterflies quite a few times here in the Algarve - as seen in the video of two feasting on wildflowers. Incredible journey where some made it thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean and then found a haven here I. Southern portugal. There’s a plant called Gomphocarpus fruticosa here which has helped them to survive and continue here.

(7) (8) It’s going to be apple picking time this week - although this year is not going to be as plentiful from our two little trees as this box last October. taken in Algarve by @krissmacd

It’s called LOVE. And it’s going to be released so you can carry flowers and nature with you wherever you go. I’ve also included the names of all the flowers I used in my botanical photograph….

Behind the scenes I’m preparing to launch premium phone cases featuring my floral artworks. A top priority was that they were ultra protective but at the same time they had the best printing quality like my limited edition fine art prints. Don’t miss out as I’ll be announcing when they’re ready in my newsletter.

Why did I call it ‘Love’? When I first created this botanical work in a past September, with flowers grown from my garden, I thought of Dolly Parton’s words: “Love is like a butterfly. As soft and gentle as a sigh. The multicolored moods of love are like its satin wings.”

There have been so many butterflies in my garden this September…but today we had the first sprinkles of Autumn rain.

Each MagSafe and Tough case is individually printed and will be shipped worldwide - exclusively from my website shop Wild About Here. by @krissmacd

September moments with Autumn hues in my garden and on the courtyard terrace. At last the Dahlias have started blooming but I’m just finding out which Dahlias survived on the terrace. I keep removable wire fences around my terrace flower beds to protect them from our rescue pups ( now all big dogs) but I accidentally left it open earlier this year….to discover that the dogs had decided it was playtime and dug up all the tubers! I replanted most of them but had no idea which - and where - they’d show up.

1. Dahlias opening up today - I think it’s a a Dahlia Fairway Spur
2. Swallowtail butterfly on the Bougainvillea
3 Dahlia in the garden
4 Appletree at sunset
5 Video in my studio last September with Dahlias and flowers from the garden, and our Westie
6 Dahlias on the terrace
7 Echinacea in the garden -
8 Last of the Nectarines
9 Our rescue Estrela Mountain Dog ( dumped as a little puppy in our garden!) … and loves digging
10 Finally this little Crepe Myrtle is flowering right now

We have four dogs - three of them rescues when they were little puppies ( dumped in our lane and even in our garden) and the Westie was my mother’s. Also two rescue cats…for four days last week Rose ( who lives with my Mum in our cottage) disappeared but I was so happy when she decided to return home ! by @krissmacd

‘The Fig & Olive Garden’ marks the change of seasons when it’s time to gather the abundance of fruit that has been ripening throughout the summer. Figs and olives are also rather special as they are symbols of peace, blessing and prosperity.

This botanical artwork is also filled with flowers grown in my garden. Fragrant Honeysuckle, Lavender, and Salvia mixed with Dahlias, Roses, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Echinacea, Plumbago and more. To highlight nature’s abundance and gifts to us I photographed multiple flatlays of these real flowers and edited them together - including the figs and olives.

Wishing you a fruitful and peaceful Autumn as we now mark the Autumn equinox x by @krissmacd

I was worried that I would have hardly any Dahlias this year but they’ve started growing again. The combo of our current heatwave but cooler nights has meant they’ve woken up after a summer break. I’ve been learning that in hot climates you can actually have two seasons of Dahlias - first in late spring and then again in the Autumn. Often October is when most of my Dahlias come into full bloom. Which is why many of my botanical art photographs include Dahlias in Autumn.

In a contrast of seasons - (1) is a flatlay from a past late August with ‘Dahlia breakouts’.. (2) is a ‘ Cafe au Lait’ flowering now with more about to bloom (3) the best flower bed for my Dahlias is on my terrace which gets lots of water, gentle morning light, and full afternoon sun (despite lots of gardening advice telling me it’s better to have almost semi shade in the afternoon, I’ve found the opposite works best for me…after a lots of experimenting!)…. (4) a little patch of Dahlias this May in my garden but they didn’t make it through the summer x taken in Algarve by @krissmacd

I’m already planning which Cosmos and Zinnias to order for next year’s garden so I can grow some of these past beauties again in my floral flat photography. I’m working on a phone wallpaper for my newsletter subscribers with a detail from the first botanical photograph ‘Along Rosemary Paths’ (sold previously as a limited edition print)…and missed having them in my current garden. And yes it’s a very long overdue newsletter!
All my botanical art is created with real flowers grown in my garden, or collected from my local fields, then photographed in natural light.
The flatlay also includes one of the more deep pink Amaryllis belladonnas that shows up in my gravel garden.

And the last image is a past favourite as I discovered a Praying Mantis hanging from the Cosmos when I edited the photograph x

Of course I’m also about to order lots of bulbs to plant in late Autumn x by @krissmacd

Amaryllis belladonna have started flowering in the garden 💕 When they bloom they grow as leafless red stalks which open into beautiful flowers. These are actually the only and true Amaryllis species - the popular flowering bulbs in all sorts of colours sold nearer Christmas time are Hippeastrum.

Amaryllis belladonna for me are a perfect drought-resistant flower as I don’t water them during the hot dry months of summer. The bulbs are planted at the surface with their necks sticking out for best flowering so I don’t have to worry about accidentally over watering them or digging them up. I’ve included a shot (no 5) of these same ones in early Spring when they have no flowers but lots of leaves.

In the next few weeks I expect more to show up including in my gravel garden🌸 by @krissmacd

September days in my corner of the world…the Algarve. Choosing flowers from the garden to reflect the change of season in my floral art photography

Dahlias start coming into full bloom…although each year I’m surprised by old and new arrivals

My home in the background…I live in the middle of the countryside. All the fields are dry (including ours) as the wildflowers continue with their beauty sleep.

My favourite time to go for a beach swim as the ocean water is usually warmest now…and no longer huge crowds..

The west coast of Algarve is a favourite area of mine for walks along the cliff tops ..such a beautiful wild area

But also love nature walks by our home with one of four dogs (three rescued as puppies)

Atractylis gummifera - one of the few wildflowers around right now

Roses are all flowering again in the garden

And frequent visits to plant nurseries to see what I can plant in my autumn garden…sometimes with some unexpected other visitors. Happy September xxx taken in Algarve by @krissmacd

I had no idea when I created and named my floral art ‘Poppy & Gladiolus’ that these two flowers are known as the August birthday flowers. I discovered they are the birth flowers for August while writing the description for my phone case (no 3 - a MagSafe Tough case) featuring this botanical art photography. My art is created with real flowers grown in my garden. The Poppies were all across the fields just outside my home - many in our own field.

Gladiolus, symbolising strength and love, flower in various months in my garden - the white Gladiolus in no 2 just bloomed this month. Poppies in our warm climate appear in Spring while showing up in the summer months other regions. I’ve started to scatter some poppy seeds already in our garden too as I love their wild mix with garden hybrids (no 5).

2. White gladiolus
3. Poppy & Gladiolus premium phone case which will be part of my first launch.
4. How I create…flowers are composed on canvas and photographed in natural light

The ripening and picking of fruit starts in August …first with the grapes from my ancient grapevine growing across my studio. We know from the family that first restored our farmhouse that it was already old about 50 years ago. Each year we still get up to 40 bunches just from this one vine. This year I left an area for the birds to enjoy during the dry hot spell as love listening to them sing amongst the grapes while I work at my studio desk. A very large snake also decided to enjoy it one year! (I’ve added in Stories some video of the birds …and the snake!)

At the moment I have lemons, nectarines, my first grapefruit…. And so many olives and figs but that’s another story. I’m still waiting for my Dahlias to come in full bloom but they’re looking much happier after surprises rainfalls this week. THe Dahlias, grapes and plumbago in the floral flatlay are from a past august x taken in Algarve by @krissmacd
