I proudly present to you: Kastlers Distributed mode loudspeaker Ver 1. This type of speaker utilizes bending wave resonances in a wooden panel to create sound, like a guitar or violin.

Using this principle can create an extremely realistic and spacious soundstage which can normally only be achieved by very expensive hifi speakers, this especially holds true for acoustic instruments and voices, another added benefit is the near omnidirectional radiation pattern which aids the "intrument-in-the-room" feeling immensely.

In this episode of Hot Tips from the Xone Zone, I show a small trick to add more bass to older tracks that sometimes feel a bit thin in the low end.

Even though it might seem counterintuitive, you can actually use the high-pass filter on Xone mixers to boost bass. This works because the filters are resonant, meaning that frequencies around the cutoff point get boosted depending on the resonance setting.

Measured examples:

Default frequency position + resonance around 2 o’clock (orange curve):
About +3 dB boost between ~15–30 Hz.
This is mostly infrasonic, but it can still add a bit of extra weight to the track.

Frequency between the first and second marking + resonance around 3 o'clock (blue curve):
Around +5 dB boost from ~25–50 Hz, which is a very useful range for boosting audible bass.

Frequency at the second marking + resonance at around 3 o' clock (turquoise curve):
The boost shifts to roughly 37–77 Hz, but you start losing some of the very low frequencies as the cutoff moves higher.

You might wonder why not just increase the bass EQ instead. The measurements show that the bass EQ boosts frequencies up to around 300 Hz, which can quickly make a mix sound muddy. Using the filter resonance allows you to target the sub and low bass much more precisely.

Hot Tips from the Xone Zone
#1 Don't leave filters on!

A lot of People think leaving the filters engaged in Default Position doesn't Impact the Sound, while this may hold true on typical home Setups(natural roll of at around 50-60hz) it can significantly Impact the Sub bass(20-30hz)
on big PA Systems that are able to recreate true Sub bass.

We can confirm this by Looking at the measurements which Show a 3db loss at 30hz and even 5db at 20hz with the resonance is set to zero.

If you want to leave the filters on go for a resonance Setting of around 11 o' Clock to get a flat Response.
