Yesterday with the Sakhindlela Foundation was so special ❤️

I’ve always felt called to be uSis’Omdala: to influence, to impact, to pave the way and inspire young black children. I’ve done this in different capacities since I was a teenager so much that my Mom actually thought I’d run an NPO (still not far-fetched 😉).

Earlier this year I prayed for speaking engagements with a real audience, because I’m a sucker for human connection and God has given me so many opportunities to share my story. I am glad it’s happening this way.

Yesterday I got to spend the day with learners from KwaJabula High and Saphumula Senior Secondary at the Ukukhanya Kwesizwe Grade 11 Mentorship by Sakhindlela Foundation. And what made it all special is that these are schools from Umbumbulu, I care so much ngendawo yangakithi.

As someone from Umbumbulu who has stood where these kids are standing, I once needed a Nokwanda Gumede. I once needed a Sakhindlela Foundation and being part of what I needed ngisakhula is a gift. Young people deserve to see themselves in people who grew up like they did and made a life for themselves because it means, they too can make it.

Moments like these really expand my heart and fill it with so much warmth. Thank you Sakhindlela Foundation for the work that you do and for trusting me with the space.

My family is my heritage and this Heritage Day, I’m giving back to them with Under Armour @underarmour

UMNGEN’ENDLINI is the courtesy gift you bring when visiting someone’s home. It says you were raised with respect, and it’s a small gesture of gratitude for the people welcoming you in.

I believe every opportunity/work I receive should begin with my family. Giving them the first fruits is how I practice gratitude, and it reminds me that when I win, they win too. That is my heritage.

First run after Elizabeth’s death & angikho right.

After today’s run I got so emotional bandla. I was breaking down from the weight of a thought I couldn’t shake: I made it home alive and Elizabeth didn’t 💔.

I needed today’s run for MYSELF. To regulate my nervous system. To reset and get to hear my own thoughts over the noise of everything else. And I can’t stop wondering if that’s exactly what Elizabeth needed too. A little time that belonged only to her but she never made it home, oh bantu 💔

I almost feel guilty that I did. I got my therapy. I get to wake up tomorrow and lace up again, and she doesn’t. All because she went for a run, kwaze kwabuhlungu.

No woman should have to weigh her peace against her safety. No woman should have to wonder, every time she steps outside, whether this is the run she doesn’t come back from.

Because for some of us, running alone is therapy. It’s the one hour/30 minutes where the world quiets down and we remember who we are.
