Amazing weekend leading worship at the Men’s Conference at @bmcr247 in Pennsylvania. For the first time ever got to have my entire family on stage with me! Sarah (keys and vocals), Norah (bass and vocals), and Moses on electric guitar. And of course our main dude Judah rocking the drums.
In awe of how the Spirit moved and 300+ men singing their hearts out for Jesus. What a God! by @kurtisparks

I heard the Holy Spirit whisper “would you write a song if I was the only one to hear it?”

I had just been signed by a label and feeling the pressure to write a hit song. Most of it was self induced, but the feeling was crushing. I kept striving only to hit a wall every time. I begged God to open up Heaven and give me a download, but it turns out my motivation was all wrong. When He asked me this question, my honest answer was “no”.

..then He said until that changes, the writers block continues. Finally, after laying everything down and repenting, the floodgates began to open and new songs began to pour out.

You’ve heard his songs and you know his voice. But what truly blew me away in this conversation with @taurenwells was his leadership and heart for church planting.
He’s learned the hard lesson that most of life following Jesus is a series of battles and blessings. And the tests and trials happen in real time.

“Anything you birth in the flesh, the flesh must sustain. But anything the Spirit births in you, the Spirit will sustain”.

Back in my church planting days, I felt stuck in a cycle of trying to stay true to vision but also growing as a congregation. Marketing, social media, and staying current with the latest trends will keep you spinning your wheels if you try to do it all in your own strength.

But what if the Holy Spirit really can do all the heavy lifting? What if it really is like St. Augustine said - praying like it depends on God and working like it depends on us.

If God calls you to something, He will give you the keys, people and resources to see it comes to pass.

On your part, you must trust. And obey.

[Part 1]

A lot of churches say they’re looking for a worship leader.

But what they actually mean is:

Someone who can sing.
Play an instrument.
Lead people.
Build teams.
Understand technology.
Run Planning Center.
Know Ableton and Multitracks.
Handle graphics.
And somehow be great at all of it.

That person might exist.

But I don’t think every worship leader needs to be a unicorn.

Sometimes the best worship director may not even be the strongest person on the platform.

I think we’ve combined too many different roles into one job and then wondered why people burn out or never feel like they measure up.

The better question might be: Who has God actually put on our team, what are they great at, and how do we build around that?
