[Part 1]

A lot of churches say they’re looking for a worship leader.⁠
⁠
But what they actually mean is:⁠
⁠
Someone who can sing.⁠
Play an instrument.⁠
Lead people.⁠
Build teams.⁠
Understand technology.⁠
Run Planning Center.⁠
Know Ableton and Multitracks.⁠
Handle graphics.⁠
And somehow be great at all of it.⁠
⁠
That person might exist.⁠
⁠
But I don’t think every worship leader needs to be a unicorn.⁠
⁠
Sometimes the best worship director may not even be the strongest person on the platform.⁠
⁠
I think we’ve combined too many different roles into one job and then wondered why people burn out or never feel like they measure up.⁠
⁠
The better question might be: Who has God actually put on our team, what are they great at, and how do we build around that?⁠
⁠

Most worship leaders didn’t get into ministry because they loved Planning Center.⁠
⁠
We got into it because we loved worship.⁠
⁠
But somewhere between setlists, rehearsals, scheduling, Christmas planning, leading people, and getting ready for another weekend… the thing that drew us into worship ministry can slowly become the thing we have the least time for.⁠
⁠
Worship itself.⁠
⁠
That’s a big part of why I created The Worship Journal.⁠
⁠
It’s not homework. There’s no test and no “right answer.”⁠
⁠
It’s simply a framework to help you slow down, sit with the songs you’re already singing, and reclaim the heart of worship underneath all the preparation.⁠

For a long time, my talent was taking me places faster than my character and spiritual formation could catch up.⁠
⁠
I had opportunities I’m incredibly grateful for. I led worship all over the world. I opened for @christomlin only about 18 months after really committing my life to Jesus.⁠
⁠
But years later, during a season where I stepped away from leading, I finally slowed down enough to hear something I desperately needed:⁠
⁠
God didn’t love me because I was a good worship leader.⁠
⁠
He loved me because I was His child.⁠
⁠
That solitude retreat started a completely different season for me. I began journaling, listening, dreaming, and learning how to be with God without needing to produce anything for Him.⁠
⁠

And honestly, that journey is a huge part of what eventually led to The Worship Journal.⁠

I had led @elevationworship “Same God” more times than I could count.⁠
⁠
I knew the chords. I knew the melody. I liked the song.⁠
⁠
But when I slowed down and actually wrote the first line in my journal — “I’m calling on the God of Jacob” — it sent me somewhere completely different.⁠
⁠
I started studying Jacob. Then his generations that followed. Then I started thinking about my own kids… and their kids… and what kind of Kingdom impact I’m praying our family will have.⁠
⁠
That’s the difference between simply learning a song and letting a song lead you deeper into who God is.⁠
⁠

I did not create this to be another book to sit a shelf most of the time. It’s a tool to help you sit with the songs, process the lyrics, pray, and know God more deeply before you ever lead or sing them.⁠
