🎉 We’re excited to announce our new partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU)!

Through our 𝘗𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵-𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘺 (PFPS) program, students in Grades 9–12 will meet weekly with KPU student mentors at the Surrey campus. They’ll explore campus life, learn about post-secondary options and resources, and get support as they think about their next steps.

As Dr. Diane Purvey, KPU President and Vice-Chancellor, pro tem, shared:
“𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙨, 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨.”

Timna Mc Doom-Vitte, our Director of Programs, also spoke about why this work matters:
“𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨. 𝙏𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙆𝙋𝙐, 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙩-𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝.”

A special thank you to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto for sharing PFPS with us and helping make it possible to bring this program to more young people in our community.

Your September news recap is here! 🎬

This month, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, KPU held its Reconciliation Flag Raising Ceremony at the Surrey campus. The event honoured Indigenous peoples while creating space for reflection.

You will also learn that a bog beneath open fields has been drawing carbon from the atmosphere for thousands of years, and that Dr. Michael Bomford will develop a plan to restore and manage bogs in a way that protects biodiversity and supports Indigenous traditions. 🌱

For students interested in research, you will see how a mix of parasitoid wasps, nematodes and fungi can protect B.C. vineyards from a damaging pest, with several KPU students gaining hands-on experience in the lab and the field as part of the research team. 🍇 by @kwantlenu

Today, we pause to honour Survivors, their families, and their communities, and to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools.

At KPU, we recognize the deep and lasting impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities across Canada. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples, reflecting on the past and committing to building a future rooted in respect, understanding, and genuine reconciliation.

This day is a reminder of the work we must continue by listening, learning, and taking action toward reconciliation. by @kwantlenu

At KPU, the classroom doesn't always have four walls. For some students, it's an eight-hectare farm. 🌱

🌾 A new $251,000 grant from TD is turning KPU Farm into an even richer place to learn, with new spaces like an Indigenous Medicine Garden guided by the Musqueam First Nation and a Traditional Chinese Medicine Garden, plus hundreds of native plants from over 60 species.

For students in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture, it means studying regenerative agriculture, culture and community, all growing in the same soil. 🌍 by @kwantlenu

📚 What book would you recommend?

We asked KPU alumni what book left a lasting impact on them. Rick Kumar, a Bachelor of Arts in English graduate, shares his pick: The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, and the powerful reason it's stayed with him ever since.

🎓 Curious what makes a great story? Rick's answer might surprise you.

Your turn! What book do you keep coming back to? 👇 by @kwantlenu

More than $65,000 raised to help Surrey youth ignite their dreams!

The 12th Annual Ignite a Dream Gala brought together more than 300 community supporters, partners, local leaders, firefighters and guests at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, raising over $65,000 to support local youth pursuing post-secondary education.

The evening celebrated young people who have overcome barriers while continuing to pursue their educational goals, while also recognizing the ongoing community work of the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society. Ten participating restaurants, sponsors, volunteers and community partners helped make the fundraiser possible.

A powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together to create opportunities, support education and invest in the next generation.
