As I start my PhD and celebrate my birthday this week, I’m reminded of a younger version of myself. During high school I was frustrated by the lack of education on black history. So I took it upon myself to gather posters, library books, and print educational materials and stand outside the cafeteria giving weekly Black history presentations to my classmates during Black History Month.

A meaningful way to uplift the history I love and critically engage with my peers, is now illegal in my beloved home state of Florida. Not that teaching Black history needed to be banned, we weren’t receiving that education anyway.

This annual exhibit never made it into any college applications or class credits. It was just what I loved to do, learning and sharing history. I’m so thankful that I get to continue my life long love for history in ways I couldn’t even imagine back then.

I’m so grateful for this younger self she was unabashed, outspoken, and dynamic. I try my hardest to protect that spirit of hers, lord knows, I need it now more than ever. Happy Birthday to her, and all past versions of myself. by @kwolanne

The beauty of surviving in part, and the lifelong task of piecing back together whatever is left. Very grateful that I’ve taken this last year to slow down, focusing on mental health, and thriving under impossible circumstances.

Starting my PhD @nyuniversity this Fall, studying Black environmental history. This has been such a journey, and I can’t believe I’m beginning in a few weeks. I honestly wasn’t sure I could do it, I thought I missed my shot. Yet here I am on the edge of what feels like endless possibilities.

A PhD has always felt like an opportunity that was out of reach for me because of my background. I’m so grateful to those who encouraged me to dream big and take risks to follow a passion that has always felt like home. History was a gift that told me that I, and the ancestors that guided me, are worth remembering.

I’m not sure what these next 5+ years will hold, you’ll probably find me reading, piecing together ancestral knowledge, writing, and hopefully having fun along the way. I can’t wait to take what I learn in the classrooms and what I find snooping through archives and put it in the hands of the people. Our history, more than ever, is a critical tool in our resistance.

As always if I can be a resource in your work, journey, research, or if you just have questions hit me up! by @kwolanne
