🌿 The 3rd Annual Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship In-Person Retreat is underway 🌿

After 10 weeks of impactful climate internships across the country, our 12 fellows are finally together in person, reflecting on their summer experiences, building community with one another, and spending intentional time in nature✨

Over the past two days, we’ve spent time getting to know one another through icebreakers, completed a six-mile hike along the Kennebunkport trail, and hosted a beach cleanup at Old Orchard Beach with Coastal Maine Outdoors.

We also had the immense honor of learning directly from Cheryl Johnson, Executive Director of @pcrchi and daughter of THEE Mother of environmental justice Hazel M. Johnson, who this fellowship is named in honor of. We’re so grateful to Cheryl for sharing her time and wisdom.

Our Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship is a 10-week paid climate internship pipeline program designed to support early-career Black women and gender-expansive people with the networks, professional experience, and community they need to thrive in the environmental and climate sector.

And we’re only two days in. More from the retreat to come🌱

Happy Earth 🌎️ Day! In celebration, we’re highlighting incredible women who are making a difference in their communities and creating meaningful change to help ensure a more eco-conscious, inclusive future for our planet.

Meet Leah Thomas (@greengirlleah), an environmental author, content creator, and event producer focused on the intersections of climate and culture. Plus, she is also the founder of Intersectional Environmentalist and @greengirlcrafts.

Meet the founders of Little Ram Oyster Co. (@littleramoysters), Stefanie Bassett and Elizabeth Peeples, who run a women-owned and operated oyster farm on the North Fork of Long Island. They grow oysters through regenerative aquaculture, helping to filter and clean the water while supporting a working waterfront.

Meet @wawa_gatheru, a Kenyan-American climate activist and the founder and Executive Director of @blackgirlenvironmentalist (BGE), a national organization dedicated to supporting Black girls, women, and gender-expansive individuals in the climate space.

Meet @kikelomoooo, Digital and Programs Assistant at @blackgirlenvironmentalist (BGE), where she works on digital strategy and programming. She creates content across BGE’s platforms, including the Get in Your Career series, and is also a filmmaker and climate storyteller.

The @sunvalleyforum has long helped underwrite participation for youth, educators, and other emerging leaders who might not otherwise be able to attend. This year, we formalized that commitment through the Sun Valley Forum Alpine Access Fund, creating a dedicated way for attendees and sponsors to expand access to the Forum.

Youth voices are at the heart of this effort. While the Fund supports a range of change-makers, helping young leaders join the conversation is a priority. Too often, financial barriers keep them from the rooms where decisions are shaped. By contributing to the Alpine Access Fund, you help ensure the next generation is not only present, but heard.

We are deeply grateful for your support.

📍 June 15–18, 2026 | Sun Valley Resort, ID

🔗 Apply to attend at the link in our bio! 20% off rate until March 1 using code EARLYBIRD. Be sure to add sponsorship of the Alpine Access Fund onto your ticket!

Kwolanne Felix joined the @sunvalleyforum to discuss building a climate movement that truly reflects all of us, especially communities historically excluded from environmental spaces.

As Fellowship & Community Manager at @blackgirlenvironmentalist, the largest Black youth-led climate organization in the U.S., @kwolanne is tackling the retention crisis head-on. Black Girl Environmentalist creates intentional pathways for Black women and gender-expansive people to not just enter climate work, but build lasting careers with mentorship, funding, and community support.

A Columbia graduate and PhD student at NYU, Kwolanne has brought her voice to COP27, the UN, and publications like @ms_magazine and @truthout. Her work connects historical movements to today's urgent climate action.

At the Forum, she reminded us why this work matters: "Being connected to nature grounds you in understanding that this is what we're fighting for. Not only are we fighting for our lives and justice, but we remember we're fighting for species, the trees, the beauty that this earth has gifted us."
