i had an incredible, beautiful, and very fast birth. it was so unremarkably uncomplicated that it left me feeling deeply grateful for my body and all of the prep work i put into delivery!!! immediately after birth i felt like myself. i had no trouble walking and was honestly shocked that we were getting to go home a little over 24 hours later.

sunday afternoon i started noticing it becoming harder and harder to walk and bend over to put lettie in her bassinet. i felt feverish and out of breath, but i told myself i was probably just exhausted and finally feeling the effects of postpartum healing. family had mentioned how out of breath i seemed and suggested i call the hospital. in true woman fashion, i convinced myself i was just being dramatic and needed to power through.

by the middle of the night i could not take a full breath. i was struggling to breathe and had intense abdominal pain that i assumed were postpartum contractions. by monday morning i couldn’t keep my eyes open. my SIL facetimed me and immediately told me to hang up and call my doctor. i will be forever grateful because that phone call truly saved my life.

once i arrived at the hospital, i was diagnosed with severe postpartum preeclampsia and retained tissue that required surgery. i had no idea postpartum preeclampsia could develop when you had no history of it during pregnancy. my liver levels were extremely elevated, and because of the retained tissue my blood counts showed signs of infection.

don’t have the words to describe how loved and cared for i felt today. every detail, every moment made me feel so seen and loved. i can’t believe our girl gets to grow up so cared for by so many. i only pray she gets to experience the female friendships i’ve gotten to in my life. the dreamiest “babylore” shower that somehow the folklore house got built for????? truly the best friends a girl could ask for. by @kyaunderscorehowe
