For Ukrainian jewelry brand Gunia @gunia_project Yevgeniy Anfalov @yevgeniy_anfalov Anna Kovalenko @anna_kvlnko developed a typeface based on Georgiy Narbut’s “Ukrainian Alphabet” (1917) — letters that became the basis for pieces cast in metal.

Narbut’s book was one of the first attempts to present the Cyrillic alphabet as a distinctly Ukrainian visual language, combining type and illustration into a Gesamtkunstwerk. He never finished it, so we had to complete the alphabet by drawing on his wider body of work — book covers, ex libris, letterings — to find the missing letters.

For jewelry, complex decorative letter detail doesn’t survive casting, so we focused on the plainest forms Narbut drew in the corner of each page. Rather than replicate individual letters, we built them into a real typeface: unifying stroke widths, stem contrast, and serif structure into one consistent system, then tested it in full words to find its rhythm. The result covers just Narbut’s 33 letters — no punctuation, no numerals.

We stayed deliberately close to the source — as a tribute to Narbut rather than a display of our own hand.

The letters then went through 3D modeling for casting: thick strokes raised higher than thin ones, with real challenges around diacritics on Й and Ї. The result is a typeface with a double life — digital font we’re going to continue working on and cast metal object that turns a historical form into a physical piece of cultural memory. #narbut #kyivtypedoundry by @kyivtypefoundry

Art historian Jan Ivanega’s book Life in a Housing Estate Pardubice 1945–2000 (Život na sídlišti Pardubice 1945–2000) traces the rise of Pardubice housing estates—from early socialist optimism and the challenges of building a “better world” to the demolition of older neighborhoods.
