April 2020 - Devil's Dream - for the Friction Quartet
Full Piece on Youtube

Shortly after the California lockdown in Spring 2020, my little brother became very ill. Though he lived alone, we could not visit him for fear of spreading the disease and his local unprepared hospital would not take him as they "needed to focus on those more at risk". His fever was very high, and he was often not able to respond to phone calls to check on him. In this time I, like many musicians, had an enormous amount of unwanted free time. I sat in an isolated room listening to the hum of appliances, fumbling my way through a mandolin beginners book, imitating those hums with this new instrument, and becoming more and more fixated on the fiddle tune "Devil's Dream". Eventually I focused my energy onto this piece for the Friction Quartet as self therapy and as a diversion. Thankfully after two grueling weeks my brother did recover. by @kyle.hovatter

My dear friends and family,
This “most wonderful time of year” is always followed by my actual favorite days. Christmas and the season leading up to it can be absolutely beautiful, but even as a kid I preferred the week before New Years to the buckets of beauty that were shoveled onto us during the Holidays. It is here in this week between the years that I have made some of the biggest decisions of my life: I will ditch Chemistry and officially be a musician, it is time to start that impossibly big project of learning a language, I will take the plunge and propose to my girlfriend, and yes three kids will be manageable.
This album is a celebration of the completion of another cycle. I personally recorded all the parts, learning the basics to the upright bass and violin. It starts like this last season: hyper rhythmic. Then it relaxes into the peace of being between patterns.
I would be honored if you would give it a listen as you sit to ponder your plans for 2026.

My sincerest hope is that this coming revolution around the sun is wonderful for you and your loved ones,
Best,
Kyle

PS In my constant struggle to fight the algorithms and Ai that dominate our lives, I have begun to deliberately listen to music recommended to me by friends and family, taking notes with a my little listening journal. I would absolutely love it if you would send me a recommended artist or album. That personal touch would really enrich my 2026.
