The first video of opening of last year's festival which took flight near the Turkish-Syrian border in September, weaving music, mythology, and movement into a breathtaking spectacle. Inspired by "The Conference of the Birds" by Persian poet Attar, our opening performance follows the mystical journey of birds in search of their king—mirroring our own quest for unity, resilience, and beauty through art.

✨ Vocals by the incredible Vanessa Kourtesi @vanessakourtesi (Greece)
🎶 Music performed by the talented musicians of Flying Carpet / Mixed by: Kyle Hovatter @kyle.hovatter / Visuals: Nima Dehghani @nimadehghani7 / Costume Design: Soheila Bajelan @soheilabajelan

In a world of borders, we create bridges. In a time of division, we tell stories of togetherness. Stay tuned for more magical moments from #FlyingCarpet2024! Thanks to our mother @sirkhane and our US partner @artogether__

It’s taken me a few months to process my experience at the Flying Carpet Festival. Like most significant things that happen in life, the lessons and insights come into focus with time and distance.

Now it all feels like a beautiful dream.

Back in September I was transported away from the familiar land of self driving cars and microclimates to an ancient town in Turkey near the cradle of civilization.

I was joined by dozens of other artists from all corners of the globe who brought with them open hearts, curious minds and a desire to create something beautiful for children who have experienced traumas and displacement.

Within our 48 hours of meeting, we created a fully produced show and spent the next week performing it in neighboring towns. Day times were spent giving music workshops to the local children in the blistering heat. I didn’t speak the local dialects but luckily we were all fluent in the language of play.

The most profound experiences for me occurred in the relationships built with the other artists. The nightly sprawling conversations about life and art over shared meals, the spontaneous musical jams and bus ride sing alongs, the debke dance parties and the bonding forged out of long hard joyous days of work.

Woven into this beauty were the bitter reminders of the uglier side of humanity:

Some days ago I returned from what I consider one of the most magical purposes I ever had the chance to serve at. @flyingcarpetfestival founded by @sahbakia in collaboration with @sirkhane
 @pinardemirallll  @circusheroesofsirkhane and with @artogether__  as a partner.

Ten days of Joy and Magic, brought to hundreds of children along the Turkish-Syrian border, a lot of small humans displaced and hurt by war. The festival is an ode to magic, to love, to dedication. Resilience through refusing to lose faith in the good and beautiful, brought to the most vulnerable and most inspiring beings, by artists from all over the globe. Singing, dancing, juggling, jamming, organizing, loving, believing, laughing, crying, eating, all together.

Please take a moment to explore this wonderful gathering and circus spectacle and consider to donate to help make it happen again and again.

A rebellion of love in the service of children & adult hearts.
