It’s my daughter Carolyn Mary Hislip’s birthday today. We seem to share the same sense of humor which delights me. Our conversations jump around from politics to Pee Wee Herman and then careen off track to some absurd, off color topic. She is my kinda girl! We “get” each other! I hope your day is all green lights, delicious things, and mountains of fun kiddo. Looking forward to our next visit. You’re the best and I love you! by @kyle_hislip

Our photography exhibit “ Cuba: A Pesar de Todo . . . “ continues until the end of the month and is a heartfelt look at the Cuban people and their environment in spite of current conditions there. We felt admiration and compassion for the people we engaged with.

The show is at The Emporium,
100 South Gay Street, Knoxville.

No one creates anything without some sort of collaboration. Asking your partner, or cat, what their opinion is about how it looks, sounds, etc is technically collaborating, so why not be more deliberate about it?

I asked these wonderful collaborators to help put together a photography exhibit, and would do it again in a heartbeat. Many thanks to @danrtalley, @joshuawaynecollins, @tonylong99, @john.mitchell.photo

The exhibit is called “Cuba . . . A Pesar de Todo”, at the Emporium Center in Knoxville through October 30. I’d love for you to enjoy it. by @kyle_hislip

May we pray for those who lost their lives today 25 years ago. And for those who developed PTSD, cancer, heart disease, and those who lost a loved one, those whose families were ripped apart because of the events of that day.

And may we hold the first responders and unseen heroes who showed to help their fellow man, those who gave their lives.

It was perhaps our finest hour: the ultimate in humanity. Strangers running in to help others, with no regard to their politics, their religion. Just concern to help those in peril without thinking about their own needs. taken in World Trade Center by @kyle_hislip

We can complain about our situation, or we can take responsibility and courageously forge a path to move into the direction we desire.

In memory of my beloved stepson Eamon.

Our family lost Eamon four years ago today and I miss him dearly.

I feel such a loss not to see him at our family gatherings, and to imagine what could have been. He was so talented, so kind and so loved by everyone who knew him. One of the ways he exuded kindness was to help the unhoused. Eamon would sit down with them, sharing food and drink while patiently listening, giving his loving attention to them.

He had such a big heart.

This extract from the poet John O’Donohue’s “On the Death of the Beloved” touches the sentiments in my heart for Eamon:

“ . . . Though your days here were brief,
Your spirit was live, awake, complete.

We look towards each other no longer
From the old distance of our names;
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.

Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything
To which we bring our best refinement.

Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.

When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.

May you continue to inspire us:

To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again. “ taken in Knoxville, Tennessee by @kyle_hislip

30 years of Paul.

Not unlike the biblical Saul , Paul has live a wild transformational story before becoming the man who he was meant to be. Ours skipped the road-to-Damascus lightning bolt, deciding to go to grad school instead.

He just finished his Master’s in Urban Planning while working full time. Don’t think he slept too much. Still manages to be one of the funniest guys I know, conjuring up quick witted, original zingers. Paul is a great travel companion, always up to explore new places.

Watching him become exactly who he is has been one of the great joys of my life. Happy Birthday Paul.
Much love to you! taken in Cloud Gate "The Bean" @ Millennium Park, Chicago by @kyle_hislip
