Our photography exhibit “ Cuba: A Pesar de Todo . . . “ continues until the end of the month and is a heartfelt look at the Cuban people and their environment in spite of current conditions there. We felt admiration and compassion for the people we engaged with. The show is at The Emporium, 100 South Gay Street, Knoxville. #artsandculturealliance #kylehislipstudio #johnmitchell

This past weekend, I had the most magical shoot creating visuals for my song “Heart Shaped Cookies” feat. @nonbright . The love was definitely in the building ❤️ I’m beyond grateful for the amazing people who helped bring this upcoming visual to life! Huge thanks to @kyle_hislip for helping set up the lighting and backdrop, Djuansay Jones of @say_film_and_photo for running the cameras, Caroline Farris for renting out the studio and being the best set designer and creative advocate there is. And last but not least, major thanks to Deshawn Johnson of @franksvintagecloset for styling me! Be on the lookout for the visual dropping this week!

These two brilliant and talented hotties joined me for a live taping of the first song Jason and I released as a duo -“Breathe In.” No rehearsal, no BS, no fear just pure heart. I want to make music with my friends every day, it’s the closest thing to a religion I’ve ever found. Much love to Mari @bustallthemoves and Shawna @cyprs for their work on this one. Shawna’s on the studio version too! She’s got a powerhouse of a voice you’re going to hear a lot more of soon. @jbush865 behind the cams on this, @kyle_hislip on the cover jpeg and as always rocking the SHIT OUTTA THAT SAX SOLO @jason_randolph_thompson

Paul Hislip will begin to enjoy the last of his “carefree twenties” today as he turns an energetic 29 years old today. He’s been pretty lovable so far, and I expect that’s just how it’s gonna be. I could rattle off a bunch of qualities that I adore about him, but it’s his kindness, his compassion for others that is so outstanding. It is refreshing to see how he cares for others.

Paul is also hilarious with a quick, original wit second to none. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon Paul. Sending lots of love to you today. Happy Birthday!!

When laying out the show I was interested in how this exhibition relates in context to the Appalachian Diaspora. The essence (spirit) of the culture at the forefront, rather than the downtrodden nature often referenced in the region. Warm luminous skies rise above colorful tree silhouette’s, the flow of space from day to night guide you into spaces of introspection. “The Joy Of Wrong Turns” is an exhibition by Kyle Hislip and Wes Roden blending narratives of memory, landscape, surrealism, spirit, metaphor, and humanity.

Donna Johnson lends her insightful perspective to Cherry East’s (@cherryeastgallery) recent exhibition, entitled “Joy of Wrong Turns”, featuring work by Kyle Hislip (@kyle_hislip) and Wes Roden (@the.oracle.art). Donna writes, “There are those among us who seem to have easier access to the sublime things of this world. Whether they were born with this gift or gained their sight through the sometimes sorrowful labyrinth of life is not important. Through art, they take the rest of us to a higher level. Wes Roden and Kyle Hislip are individuals who have the courage to see a vision and put it out there for all to see.” Read the full review at hellmouthmag.com 🔗 — 1 - “Insomnia Green,” detail, Hislip. 2 - Donna Johnson (writer) with gallerist Joshua Collins. 3 - “Hess at Dawn,” Roden. 4 - “Insomnia Yellow,” Hislip. — { exhibition review, painting, photography, cherry east gallery, cherry blossoms, insomnia, Cuba, nostalgia, sorrowful labyrinth of life, joie de vivre, variance of the human spirit }
