Hey there! If you’re new around here, here’s a little about me 👋

I live in the stunning Canadian Rockies near Calgary, Alberta, and I’m a proud mom to two teen boys (how did that happen so fast?!).

I’ve been on Canada’s Ski Mountaineering National Team for the past 15 years, racing World Cups and World Championships. Before that, I spent two decades flying around the ice as a high performance short and long track speed skater.

I have two degrees, political science and economics and I once thought I’d be an accountant… wow, was I wrong! 😅

After three decades in sport and a whole lot of training, racing, mentorship, and lessons learned I found my true calling: coaching.

Now I’m a coach with @evokeendurance —a leader in mountain sport coaching and studying for my MSc masters in strength, conditioning and coaching with @altis. I absolutely love helping people chase big goals in wild places. If you have a mountain sport goal or just want to get stronger, faster, and fitter? Send me a DM:)

When I’m not coaching, you’ll find me mountain biking, rock climbing, ski mountaineering, or trail running. Moving quickly in the mountains is my greatest passion any season, any terrain.

Random facts? I love carbs 🍪, hate lentils, drink coffee like it’s a food group, and will jump into any alpine lake I find in summer 💦

Thanks for being here. I try to keep this space positive and real but remember, it’s always just a glimpse into someone’s life. I hope it inspires you, the way so many of you inspire me ✌️💕 by @kyleektoth

Meet Kylee Toth, a champion ski mountaineer, dedicated mom, and one of Alberta’s boldest athletes.

As she pushes toward qualifying for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Kylee trains in the place that fuels her spirit: Alberta’s iconic Rocky Mountains. ⛰️✨

Up here, the climbs are steep, the air is crisp, and the views are pure Alberta magic. With every peak she reaches, Kylee proves that the greatest journeys begin right here at home.

This is what an uphill battle looks like — Alberta style. ❄️⛷️

Thankful!

All these photos are perfectly imperfect, kind of like life. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🦃 Whether it’s spent with friends, family, or simply doing something you love. ✌️💕 by @kyleektoth

When I was racing skimo, almost every athlete on the World Cup circuit would slurp back a bicarbonate slurry 1–2 hours before racing.

Now, after the most recent Tour de France, I’ve been reading about athletes ingesting a newer sodium lactate gel.
I’m a naturally curious person, and I really care about understanding the why behind anything you put into your body or at least understanding the hypothesized mechanism the supplement is trying to target.
That sent me down a rabbit hole trying to understand where these products fit into the bigger jigsaw puzzle of physiology.
Why would we ingest lactate when so many of us grew up being told lactate was the thing making our legs burn?
What actually happens to lactate once we produce it?
What does bicarbonate buffer?
And is lactate actually a friend rather than a foe?
I initially made this into an Instagram post, but the more I tried to simplify it, the more I realized I was leaving out important pieces or creating new misconceptions.
So I turned it into a Substack article instead.
If you’re curious about lactate, the lactate shuttle, bicarbonate and some of these newer interventions, take a read.
Sorry, not sorry, it reads a little like a textbook. 😂 Some things just can’t be reduced to our swipe-friendly carousels.
Enjoy nerding out with me. 🤓

Mountains getting dressed in white 💅 . I think they look better with a bit of snow it pops the definition and contrast.

Always a lovely visit to the “fjord hike of Alberta.” 😉 Not really, but it definitely has a dramatic feel.

Years ago, when I retired from speed skating, I was lucky to have great psychology support. Shoutout to Clare Fewster, a psychologist at the Canadian Sport Institute.

She told me that what I might miss most at least initially wasn’t necessarily the sport itself, but its organizing principle.

That idea has stayed with me.

I’d been skating at the Olympic Oval since I was five, and at 13 I entered the national training centre and attended a sport school. From 13 until I retired at 23, I trained six days a week, often twice a day. My time, goals, priorities and so much of my identity were organized around skating.

When something like that ends, you don’t just lose the activity. You lose the structure around it, the routines, goals, priorities and sense of direction that helped organize your days.

And I think that’s useful well beyond sport.

Retirement, becoming a parent, changing careers, losing someone, children leaving home, big transitions can remove structures we may not even realize were holding so much of our lives together.

I’ve carried Clare’s words through many of those transitions myself. What I’ve found helpful isn’t trying to replace what was, but finding something new that gives my time some structure and direction.

This time for me after retiring from skimo it’s pursuing my work as a coach and my master’s degree in strength and conditioning.

So maybe when we’re struggling through a transition, one useful question is:

What can give me some structure and direction now? by @kyleektoth

What’s better than a few larches?… ALL the larches! 💛🍂

The weather was perfect, so I finally did a beautiful day point to point traverse running route I’ve wanted to do for a while. This one is pretty hard to beat in the fall: ~40 km and ~2,000 m through one beautiful, larch-filled zone after another.

Vista Trailhead (Hwy 93S) → Arnica Lake → Twin Lakes → Gibbon Pass → Shadow Lake → Ball Junction → Egypt Lake → Healy Pass → Sunshine Village Parking.

Beautiful trails, stunning fall views, and larches for days.

Happy larch hunting! 😉🍂

📸 Fun way to celebrate one of our most dedicated skimo volunteers and referee’s 60th bday too with his longest run! Thanks for being game for the punishment I mean adventure @jamesreverett 👍 🎉 by @kyleektoth

Incredible views in a spectacular place on a crisp autumn day. 🍂🏔️

Really enjoyed climbing Grassi Ridge on Wiwaxy, a fun adventure route with my good friend Kat in the magnificent Lake O’Hara.

Alpine season is quickly coming to a close, so I’m squeezing in every last day I can. taken in Lake O'Hara by @kyleektoth

CdA (Coefficient of Drag) and marginal gains aren’t new but I love seeing the science of aerodynamics showing up more and more across sports.

Back in the early 2000s when I was speed skating, I remember cramming myself into a long-track skinsuit that looked like it was made for a small child, I had a hard time standing upright in it all in the pursuit of reducing drag. 😂

Now we’re seeing increasingly sophisticated aerodynamic testing in running, cycling, triathlon and speed skating, DH skiing right down to fabric texture and clothing placement.

Small gains? Absolutely. But when hundredths of a second matter, physics matters too. 💨 by @kyleektoth

As a middle-aged woman, my feed is increasingly inundated with fashion tips and tricks to help me look more “put together,” “slimmer,” or “younger.” 🙄

So, in an effort to help other women and moms, I present my go-to fall fashion trend:

The @lasportivana climbing jean.

Crag? ✔️
Bike park? ✔️
Podium? ✔️
School pickup? ✔️

Fashion can be fun but it can also be restrictive and silly. Life’s too short to worry too much about whether you look sufficiently “put together.”

And while I’m at it… hell yes to aging. You earned those wrinkles. Take care of your body, keep using it, keep challenging it, and it can stay pretty damn awesome for decades. 💪 “What can my body do?”Will always be the question before, “how does it look?”. Our bodies are marvellous and incredible tools to help us enjoy life!

Anyway, thanks for coming to my fall fashion tutorial. 😂 by @kyleektoth
