Monarch Trip Report: Part 2

Day one on the ice was spent establishing camp, enjoying some good corn skiing, and gazing at the N face of Princess Mountain. John Baldwin describes it as "an attractive summit" and that's no understatement. Knowing that we had good weather for at least a couple of days, and most of our objectives lay further north on the Icefield, we decided to make a move on Princess so we could move camp soon.

The ascent moved through a complex crevasse field with many seracs so we got started early. Then the next crux, pushing through to ridgetop, was surprisingly facetted for the coastal snowpack we were expecting. It was a battle to get through that, over some serious exposure, and Aidan luckily had the grit to establish the hardest moves. From there an easy ridge walk led us to the entry to our line. A small air over a serious bergshrund put us on the hanging ice face of Princess. The skiing was chalky and edge-able thankfully, and it was an amazingly aesthetic line to ski. Stoke was high as we all regrouped clear of the main face. From here we had an incredible corn ski back down through the icefall and back to camp. A great first objective, with all the ingredients to prepare us for what was to come. by @kylegorenko

Our Monarch journey started with a long drive to Tatla Lake, where we spent two nights at this rustic gem: The Graham Inn. The hospitality was unreal and it made the perfect jumping point while we did our final packing and set our shuttle for the trip. We chose to fly in then walk out, minimizing our time below treeline as the temps were starting to really rise. It took two flights to get 5 of us and our gear in, so we staged one group in a random cow field to shorten the second flight.... easily the funniest way I've begun a trip, just hanging out in a cow field in the middle of nowhere waiting a couple hours for a heli pickup. Luckily we had Pass the Pigs with us ๐Ÿ˜‚ The flight in was perfect, and our first camp was set at the SE end of the icefield with great views of Princess Mountain and what lay ahead. taken in Tatla Lake, British Columbia by @kylegorenko

Monarch Icefield "Bass-verse", May 2-13 2026. Definitely the most complex ice I've moved through. So many epic ski mountaineering missions scattered across a stunning icefield in the central coast mountains. So stoked to share it with an amazing team. Perhaps the last trip of the season? .... Either way, more pics to come for sure. taken in Monarch Icefield by @kylegorenko

6 days of skiing in The Rockies that started with the question "would it ever be the play to go shells with no socks or liners?" and ended with 1200m of the most premium corn skiing ๐ŸŒฝ. Obviously punctuated with a whole host of everything else you'd expect in between.

Maybe we'll hang em up in a week or two ๐Ÿคท taken in Lake Louise, Alberta by @kylegorenko

Alpine season continues to fire on all cylinders ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Some snaps from a surreal time camping at 3000 metres and exploring this vast expanse of ice and peaks. Can't thank @bigbendbackcountry enough for bringing me along on this trip and providing so much quality mentorship ๐Ÿ™ I'm always in awe when exploring a new area like this at how expansive the wilderness is in Canada. We're a lucky bunch! by @kylegorenko

I'm so grateful to be able to say that I skied with Jud.

Life has been a whirlwind over the last three weeks, and I have been struggling to put into words everything I've been feeling. On November 15th, 2025 the world lost an incredible person, who was so many things to so many people. Those of us that were lucky enough to spend time with Judson knew him as a passionate, quirky, driven, intelligent, selfless, hilarious, loving, and accepting individual who lifted up everyone around him.

Personally, I was lucky to know Jud as a friend and a mentor. Someone who always helped me to be my best, never shied from calling me on my shit, always had time to help with anything, and loved to have a good time. I'll forever cherish every run that we got to share and every note we played together, and of course every guides meeting that ran a little long... forever the contrarian am I right @haydenmany ? Jud taught me what good tequila is, how to tell a rounding facet from a facetting round, and above all else, the importance of striving for balance and caring for your family and friends. After all.... "it's just skiing".ย

Few people live life so fully as Judson did, and he will forever be an inspiration. This winter is for you Jud โค๏ธ by @kylegorenko

WCT '25.

To say the West Coast Trail lived up to expectations would be a massive understatement. From the beautiful coastal forest's to the soft sand beaches, and all the roots, mud, and wildlife encounters in between, this corner of the world exudes magic and abundance at every turn. This has been a dream of mine for a long time. So happy to get to see it through with such a great group of pals! @colourme_katie @hopemikal @jonesbentley504 @chrisfergin @cam_morgan6 .

Already looking forward to the next trip along this incredible coastline! taken in West Coast Trail by @kylegorenko
