Salmon Glacier ➡️ Ningunsaw Pass Traverse

170kms walked and skied over 7 days through the biggest "cunch" I've ever been in. Awestruck, inspired, and tired are three feelings that come to mind.

Thankful for an incredible team (led by @lifesajyebeach ), splitter (mostly) weather, and all the support from friends and family that allows me to chase these dreams. I've got so much more to share but here's a coupla snaps of that gigantic place that hopefully do it a bit of justice. #goodpushboys #justoverthenextroll #havefungetrad

Really slacked on getting content from the Canyon out. Here's a couple of my fav snaps from the mid-portion of our trip: killer whitewater, beautiful canyons, and some epic fun times on and off the river. God I miss it in there and the homies I got to share it with ❤️ #havefungetrad

Grand Canyon '23: Day 0-5

After so much planning and anticipation, we finally made our way to the river on April 25, 2023. We arrived knowing that the river was in full flood, with a "High Flow Experiment" causing 40,000 cfs (roughly 1100cms) of water to be released into the river from the Glen Canyon Dam. According to our driver, there was generally at least 200ft more of the beach than we were seeing, illustrated in photo #2 of the sign which is meant to be well on land. Rigging went relatively smooth despite cramming over 3000 beers in with all our other gear.

The next morning, April 26, 2023 we launched from the private boater's camp to embark on our 21 day journey. The high flow was very apparent, making the guidebook descriptions of the rapids nearly completely moot. In our first two days we were expecting a challenge with House Rock, the first Class 7, and then the Roaring Twenties, a 10 mile section of rowdy whitewater. Both of these stretches were washed out to the point of being mainly benign, and I gave the "Roaring Twenties" the nickname the "Meowing Twenties" at these flows. However, eddy lines were strong, and large waves crashed unexpectedly from every angle.

The biggest challenge from the HFE came on our second night, as the water dropped. Being camped at a tight point in the canyon, the waterline dropped 15 vertical feet in just 16 hours. We constantly had to re-tie and shift our boats into the night. I went to bed at 12:30 with an alarm set for 02:00am, and awoke to 4 boats beached: three minor enough we were able to get them back afloat, and one so stranded it took the whole crew the next morning.

Some of the many highlights of the first 5 days were Redwall Canyon, Vasey's Paradise, Nankoweap Camp, and numerous small and large side hikes. Not to mention bonding with our crew, and settling into the rhythm of an extended river trip.

Finally got through all my Grand Canyon photos from the most fulfilling 21 day adventure I've ever been on 🤯💯

It was an absolute honour to share this trip and place with so many incredible weirdos, getting to know each other and the river and forging bonds that will last a lifetime. There was lots of excitement, shenanigans, adventures, joy, tears, and learning on this trip - far too much to include in one post. So, over the next couple days I'll share some tidbits about the trip along with some of my favourite photos and memories. Thanks again to everyone for making this dream a reality. My heart and soul are full ❤️✨🫶🤗 #havefungetrad #nevernotkillingit #tightloose

The last couple of days have been a real treat and killer learning opportunity working with @kootenaybackcountry_guides to offer a Lodge Based AST-2 to some amazing people! It's always a pleasure working alongside @judsonawright and getting the chance to help folks learn safe travel habits and careful assessment in the backcountry. Spending time in the mountains is such a joy and privilege, I'm thankful I get to do it with so many radical different people 🙏🏔️⛷️

I also got the sweet opportunity of helping to test out a new lightweight ski touring bag from @northernultralight - keep your eyes peeled for when this goes to production because it's an amazing bag that tours like a dream! Thanks Scott! #havefungetrad

Got home to Nelson last night after a Hawaiian Vacation 🌴🍍🍹

Still buzzing after traversing the Valhalla Range with these all-time dudes, from Gimli to Shannon Lake. 5 days, 4 nights, 3 dudes, 2 bags of dehydrated cheesecake, and 1 flask of tequila.

With an absolutely PERFECT weather window we were treated to low avy hazard, mellow trail breaking, and great snow on North aspects 👌 Still can't believe all of this amazing terrain is right in our backyard, and protected by a Provincial Park 😍

This weekend I had the opportunity to help teach an AST 1 course with @kootenaybackcountry_guides here in Nelson. 6 years ago I took my first avalanche course in Kamloops and it was only my fourth day on skis. Ever. It quite literally changed my entire life and I value the experiences I've had in the mountains with everyone so much. 🙏

It was so inspiring, reaffirming, and just friggin' STOKE INDUCING to get to introduce more people to the epicness that is being in the backcountry!! Get out, get educated, and stay stoked my friends 🤙 #BESTDAYEVER

I took my first rest day from skiing in over two weeks today which gave me a chance to get through some photos!

Last week we got a crew together to do the Bonnington Traverse and it was such a siiiick experience, spending 3 nights in the backcountry checking out these cool huts and new (to us) ski terrain. Here's some photos from Day 1 of the traverse, gonna post a few from each day over the next little while 🤙

I can't wait to go back and ski some of the lines that needed more snow, and spend more nights getting silly in the huts with close friends. Thanks boys for the awesome time @cailsmith13 @reiddowg @gcarpendale
