Specificity with a side of GPP.

All rehab should encompass something in this fashion. Different people with different injuries will have different needs (obviously). There is no one magical exercise for anyone, though every once in awhile you can get lucky.

Assess movement expression. Address what’s missing. Then move the person back towards their goals.

This might be too reductionist but gradual exposure will begin to solve a lot of problems.

Don’t be so swayed by the competing noise on social media. It’s easy to get swept away in the tide. by @kylehabdo

“Better is better.”

Good assessments are not about learning every single thing there is to know about someone. More information is not always better. Better information is better.

It is about determining what is important for the client, what will help them move towards their goal, and how to build a strong coach-athlete relationship.

Save this for your next session and actually improve your overhead mobility.

There’s nothing wrong with passive stretching but it’s normally done without intention and without purpose. You may as well swap the band and put some intention behind your mobility training.

Like every other training quality, you need to create an overload (over-stimulus) to see meaningful change. by @kylehabdo

Save this warm-up your next squat/snatch session.

This took me less than 10 minutes to run through. Stop over complicating things or warming up with overly passive things (aka laying on a foam roller).

We all started wide-eyed not knowing what we didn’t know. The key was finding others (creating a Think Tank if you will 😉) that allowed us to learn, ask questions, and grow together.

If you’re on your coaching journey and want that same thing we’d love to have you join us for our first Weekend Mentorship Sept 18-20.

Early bird pricing is live through Aug 17.

Coming as a group from your gym? Buy 3 spots get a 4th free.

Coaching has opened a lot of doors and opportunities that I didn’t know were in front of me. It feels a bit cliche to say this, especially since I’ve seen a lot of these posts, but I am incredibly grateful for this job.

Watching people strive for things beyond their current capacities and reach their potential fuels me to keep pushing and growing as a coach.

@keightmagee

Two times Masters CrossFit Games athlete. If there was self-doubt about belonging, you can shed that now. You have proven you can compete and be amongst the best. No longer are you the “worst of the best.” It’s time for us to take on a new title and build for something more.

I’m proud of you and the progress you have made.

@nata_kaczmarska

Over the years, we have been spots out from making the Games so to see you finally make it was something very special. We have been working together as long as I’ve been at @trainingthinktank and it was cool that we were finally able to meet in person.

I know the weekend wasn’t as smooth as we wanted it to be, but I’m proud of you staying in the fight even when things were uncomfortable and not going according to plan.

I look forward to see what is in store for us next.

@keightmagee

This moment is awesome for two reasons:

1. In true Kate fashion, finishing a race and being unsure if you’re actually done instead of just selling it.

2. A year ago, you got emotional anytime I programmed 150lbs sandbag work. To see you get to your shoulder eight times and finish was truly awesome.

I’ve been a lot of things at the Games in recent years. A coach, a physio, a body worker, and some sort of supporting role. But I haven’t been much of a spectator.

While I’m looking forward to getting back in a coaching role, it was nice to be able to watch and enjoy the races.

I was back at the air bnb by myself and took a break from programming. I turned around saw the light shining through the window.

It was a good in the moment moment I wanted to hang onto.

Nonlinearity.

Small moments can create large changes. Most of those who arrive continue to build on these moments day after day, week after week. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where growth happens until you’re by @kylehabdo

Burn the boats.

I recently read that time travel is possible. You have to break the monotony of life, the daily tasks that build up and become subconscious background noise leaving you operating on autopilot. You need new experiences, new adventures, to pull you from the depths of the ordinary.

We are days out from the CrossFit Games. From some, it’s accomplishing a long term goal for the first time. For others, it’s a return to prove they belong and are good enough to be counted among the best.

Whatever your position, be in the moment. Rise to the challenge of discomfort and leave nothing to regret. Pace where needed, attack when warranted, and take a chance on yourself. Build yourself a place in time where you can come back to when the normal rhythm of life sets in.

So set fire to the boats. Give yourself no out. No way but to move forward. Make the most out of this moment.

Good luck to everyone competing next week.

Mobility training.

I’m being a bit sarcastic there, but we’re so concerned with labels and making sure things fit in neat boxes, or minimally, the boxes we think they should fit in. Mobility is such a vague terms thats become overly generalized and almost aligned with passive stretching, foam rolling, or very specific breathing drills.

Most days, I have less than 90 minutes to do some high quality training which is more than enough time for someone with really no immediate goals.

Call it mobility training, call it strength training, call it rehab.

I’ve said this before but I think more people should play in their training and not limit themselves to finely designated straight lines. by @kylehabdo
