We have a bunch of new merch on the webstore now, all with artwork by @kylermartz. 26oz water bottles, Comfort Colors pocket tees in black, olive green and blue, and bandanas in brown and turquoise (printed in Portland by @mysto_screenworks). We also have stickers and matchboxes that are included in every order. Kyler designed our first bandana about a decade ago and we are super happy to be able to collaborate with him once again! Supplies are pretty limited, especially for the T shirts. by @kylermartz

Re-interpretation of one of, if not my favorite sheet of American tattoo designs.

I threw these little pots on the wheel, well I threw one and cut it in half. The rest is a mix of vintage paper, enamel paint, wood, glass and some lamp parts.

A lot of work to try and make something that looks as effortlessly cool as a Bert Grimm sheet, and is there anything less cool than trying too hard? Oh well, here’s another sheet for the flash book anyways. by @kylermartz

A whimsical new piece of artwork now welcomes visitors to the recently renovated Hollywood Library, bringing beloved Portland author Beverly Cleary’s world to life through the eyes of an artist who grew up loving her books. “A Stroll Down Klickitat Street,” created by illustrator and artist Kyler Martz (@kylermartz), features eight illustrated panels celebrating Cleary’s cherished characters, including Ralph S. Mouse, Henry Huggins, Ramona and Beezus Quimby, and faithful companions Ribsy and Socks, interwoven with the Portland places that shaped her stories. The backlit installation transforms the library’s entrance into a stained-glass homage, celebrating Cleary’s lasting contributions to children’s literature.

Created digitally, Martz drew inspiration from decades of Beverly Cleary book illustrations, paper dolls, and other archival materials, blending them with his nostalgic illustrative style to create original artwork that brings Cleary’s most cherished characters to life in a fresh, contemporary way.

“My brother and I were so fascinated with the world of Ralph S. Mouse that we immediately checked out the sequels from the library, followed by every one of her other books. My desire to build my own worlds, like that of Henry Huggins, was a huge part of why I began drawing around the same time. Inspiration from Cleary’s themes of anthropomorphic creatures and mischievous household pets is still clearly visible in my work today.” - Kyler Martz, Muralist

“A Stroll Down Klickitat Street” was commissioned by Multnomah County Library and managed by the Portland Street Art Alliance (PSAA), which facilitated the artist selection, research, and design process. The project came together with invaluable support from Malcolm Cleary (Beverly Cleary’s son and estate manager) and HarperCollins Publishers.

A special thank you to Kyler Martz. This project was full of local love and nostalgia, and your love for the stories of Beverly Cleary is apparent in this piece and keeps her work alive for generations to come!

A mural for @thecabinidaho inspired by it’s history with the Civilian Conservation Corp, and few other legends of Idaho history, including the 1948 Fish and Game program to relocate a beaver population using World War II parachutes (stranger than fiction, and even stranger, it worked).

The Cabin is a wonderful non-profit that hosts authors, writing camps and workshops, celebrating reading and writing. It was an honor to contribute to the space and I encourage anyone interested to check them out and consider supporting. taken in Boise, Idaho by @kylermartz

This painting was commissioned by the @multnomahcountylibrary and facilitated by @portlandstreetartalliance for the recently opened NW branch located at 2030 NW Pettygrove. It is based upon the history of the Slabtown neighborhood and the migration of the swifts at nearby Chapman Elementary.

I generally try to approach murals like I would a backpiece, bold and simple enough to get the main idea in a quick glance. However the proptions of this piece, (64ft long and only 4ft tall) required a different approach than usual. In the end this piece feels more like a giant handpainted wallpaper, with tons of little details that invite multiple viewings. I think this is the most time I have spent on a single painting.

Public art can be a challenge to navigate, but is ultimately the most fulfilling work I’ve done, and I’m very grateful to PSAA and Multanomah County Libraries for the opportunity. taken in Northwest Portland by @kylermartz
