In Maputo, opportunities for employment are scarce. Colonialism, civil conflict and unequal development have left communities facing poverty, with limited access to essential services and job opportunities.

Kutenga is working to fill this gap by partnering with women and men, often living with HIV/AIDS, across 32 neighbourhoods in Maputo.

Through its Recycling Initiatives, Kutenga turns waste into income-generating opportunities. Used cooking oil is converted into soap and sold at local markets, giving members a way to earn an income while building entrepreneurial skills.

Community Savings Programmes enable members to pool their resources, access to low-interest microloans and invest in small businesses.

That’s food grown, harvested and never eaten, along with the land, water and work that went into producing it.

Grassroots organizations supported by the Kym Rapier Foundation are turning waste into value.

In Brazil, @favela_organica teaches zero-trim cooking and waste utilization. Stems, peels and leaves that would otherwise be discarded become part of nutritious meals.

In Mozambique, Kutenga turns used cooking oil into soap sold at local markets, creating a source of income for community members.

Favela Organica teaches zero-trim cooking and waste utilization, showing people how to use parts of ingredients that are usually discarded.

The school also follows the principles of a circular food economy. Participants turn food scraps into compost and return seeds to the soil to grow fresh food, helping close the loop between consumption and production.

@loah_org in Meru, Kenya, tackles food security by teaching children how to grow their own food.

Children aged 5 to 12 learn kitchen gardening, seed collection, propagation, and vegetable harvesting on the organization’s biodynamic farm.

Its mission to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal on responsible consumption and production.

Grassroots organizations like this one are leading the way.

Research shows that a hungry man is a violent man.

In Hanover Park in Cape Town, South Africa, gang violence is a daily reality for many children, young people and families. The Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF) provides warm meals through its feeding programme, alongside after-school programmes, youth groups, education support and empowerment programs.

Founded by a mother who lost her son to gang violence, AAF works to create sustenance, support and safe spaces for people in Hanover Park.

South Africa faces some of the highest levels of gang violence in the world, driven by apartheid-era spatial segregation, inequality, and poverty.

The nation’s unemployment rate hit 33% in 2026, compared to the global average of 4.9%. In communities starved of economic opportunities, gangs offer young people income, status, and belonging, trapping generations in a vicious cycle of violence.

The Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF) provides vital safety and support to the Hanover Park community, serving as a lifeline for families, unemployed adults, and grieving mothers who have lost children to gang violence. By offering daily meals and mentorship for adults with safe after-school programs for youth, the organization creates spaces that nurture development while offering positive alternatives to the environments where gang activity takes hold.

Regenerative agriculture, unlike industrial agriculture, produces food while building healthier, more resilient land for the future.

The Kym Rapier Foundation supports grassroots organizations developing more sustainable ways to grow food. From building soil health to supporting biodiversity, these practices help feed communities while strengthening the land they depend on.

Originally founded as an organization to support women surviving gender-based violence, @hikone_mocambique recognised that food insecurity and a lack of financial independence was one of the underlying issues affecting women and their families.

The organization expanded into regenerative agriculture to help feed communities across Mozambique while creating opportunities for women to earn an income.

For the farm featured in these images, the land was initially rocky and unsuitable for crops. But that didn’t stop the women in Mufuiane from making it work.

This year’s El Niño is expected to be one of the strongest in the last 40 years.

Bringing drought to some areas and flooding to others, this weather phenomenon will severely disrupt crop and livestock production.

When harvests fall, food supplies become limited. When supply is limited, prices rise. And those already experiencing food shortages are hit the hardest.

This month, we’re looking at how our partner organizations are responding to food insecurity in their communities.

With limited access to resources and essential services, each organization has developed its own approach to creating sustainable food and feeding programs that help their communities build resilience and independence.

Every education organisation supported by the Kym Rapier Foundation looks different because every community is different.

But they all recognise that education doesn’t only happen in the classroom. By providing wraparound support for their students, these organizations create the conditions for learning to flourish.
