it’s been 5 years — but hi, i’m back 📚
I finished Giovanni’s Room by the goated author James Baldwin recently and safe to say, my taste in books have shifted from Fantasy/YA to more towards Asian Lit and the classics over the last 5 years. I suppose it goes hand-in-hand with the experiences and personaly growth that’s led me to where I am today (still LOOOVE fantasy, though).

Anyway, if you’re seeing this, that means you’re still following my bookstagram, and I’m so grateful I’m not alone and I get to enjoy books with you. 🫶🏻

The day before I flew to Spain, I collapsed in the middle of Tanjong Pagar. Cold sweat, nausea, hot & cold flashes, eyes rolling to the back of my head. A security guard caught me.

Doctor cited dehydration, menses cramps, low iron smth smth…. but I knew that there was also something terribly untangling in my soul, and it was beginning to fester physically. I didn’t know what, though.

Then I fly. I leave Singapore. I go see the life that goes on outside my reality. The first 2 days in Spain, my shoulders were tense, my throat tight. I struggled to relax.

If there’s one thing Southern Europe got right, it’s the art of slow living. Nobody rushes — not in the streets of Sevilla, or the hills of Malaga. Tbh, I wanted to be bitter. Here’s a country that colonised my entire ancestral line, and look at them doing SO well. But everyone was so LOVELY and sweet and I was frustrated because I couldn’t place my exhaustion anywhere. What to do?

I cried a lot on this trip, and I can’t begin to explain why. I think living in Singapore does that to you, no matter how much you consider yourself in a pretty good standing in this little red dot. I think travel heals, simply because it places perspective in your hands and asks you to view it with an open heart.

challenged by my own creation? yes. 😩 did not expect this one to be Massively Tiring but i guess that’s the whole point… wanted to test my stamina/speed/agility and i’m still not sure how much of that was successful but oh wells! at least i tried 🙏🏻 here’s to being a work-in-progress! by @kyrifics

You- I- me— we need fun. We need PLAY.

You know the story. You’re living it: adulthood sets in, and everything else takes a backseat. But the older I get, the more I crave for something FUN to look forward to in my everyday life, and to have friends to enjoy such activities with. I guess that’s exactly why we need people—we need communities and safe spaces where we can be creatively curious.

When we arrived in Singapore, one of the first things my mum told me was, “Remember, you are a second-rate citizen here.”

She means: because I’m Filipino, I have to study harder, be smarter, hide my accent and fight harder just to secure a spot to success among my peers.

This is the final thing I’m putting up as a 29-year old, and it’s a short letter to one of my biggest struggles growing up in Singapore and constantly grappling with my Filipino identity.

No amount of essays, podcasts and books could ever convey the very real and daunting feeling of being uprooted from home and trying to survive in a country where you are the minority.

Perhaps in the recent years it’s become cool to be Filipino — we’re some of the warmest, funniest (and greatest singers) out here. But for the better part of my adolescent years I’ve lived with shame. Shame that I have slowly started to unlearn. Still, let this be my word:

I’m deeply proud to be Filipino.
We folks know pain.
We always rise above it.

In my next life, let me be born a Filipino again.
