unfortunately, our generation is not too far removed from the horrors of segregation, racial terror, and systemic injustice. yet, sometimes it feels like we have become distracted. within the Black community, we often spend so much time debating minor issues that we lose sight of the bigger battles still in front of us.

while we have made immense progress over the past century, progress is never guaranteed. history has shown us time and time again that rights can be challenged, restricted, and even taken away if we become complacent. that is why we CAN NOT afford to stop advocating for justice.

this visit has reminded me that our responsibility extends beyond remembering history, we have to continue making it. advocacy doesn’t stop with the Black community. we must also stand with women, the LGBTQ+ community, and anyone whose humanity and rights are being challenged. justice should NEVER be conditional.

Malcolm X once said, “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.” those words are equally as relevant today. we as a people are NOT angry enough!! our generation must be willing to stand for something greater than ourselves. everybody wants to be Black until it’s time to bear the weight of what it has meant, and still means, to be Black… by @l.ailasymone
